My husband and I booked the Victoria Resort,Puerto Plata last minute at the end of November,2002.The resort is visually attractive. The rooms were always clean and neat and it was great to have an air conditioned room. The resort has two swimming pools and there were various activities around the main pool during the day. We spent most of our days at the beach which was a short walk away. The beach was lovely and we always had our lunch at the beach restaurant that was included in our all inclusive package. The food was adequate, but certaintly not fantastic. We were also very disappointed with the selection of food at the main buffet restaurant. We were thankful that we had a fridge in our room and that we had brought our own snacks. When we were able to get a reservation(only twice during the week)the food was very good. The drinks were plentiful, again they were included in our all inclusive package. Aside from the food the biggest disappointment was the lack of entertainment. The social staff was young and inexperienced. They loved to be the "entertainment". Sadly, they did not realize that the stage area cleared each night as a result of their doing. We found the senior staff very stern and "by the book". One evening I wanted pizza from the small pizzeria. My friends wanted to eat in the buffet restaurant. I was not "allowed" to order my pizza from the pizzera(next door) and bring it into the restaurant to join my friends. We often noticed some of the senior staff scolding some of the waiters. The atmosphere was not as free as you would expect on a vacation in the sun. A couple of us managed to become quite ill(flu like symtoms) for a couple of days. I need to praise Andree, the Rep. from Signature Vacations for taking us to a clinic to see the doctor. Sadly, the toliets in our room were old and in poor repair. So that was an unpleasant experience! We enjoyed touring around the north part of the country. We were able to hire a local man by the name of Martin. Martin was generous with his tours and he managed to take us to some "Haitian Villages" to visit the country schools and hospitals. It was a very real experience that we will always treasure. A teacher was equally moved by the school supplies that we had brought from Canada. Although a small gift on our part, we knew that many children would benifit from the paper, crayons, markers, sissors, etc.
I had the most fun on our final night at the Victoria Resort. A group of people from Britian decided to be the evenings entertainment. Three of the men did the "full monty". It was the first time all week that everyone was truly entertained. The social staff were not amused and the lights and microphone were turned off. We were pleased that we were able to meet some great people and see a part of the D.R. However, the staff attitudes and the poor choice of food selection from the buffet restaurant would keep us from returning to the Victoria Resort.
