Dominican Republic Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Secrets Excellence 12/11/2003
Reviewers Rating: Good
We love the beauty and peacefulness of the Dominican and would strongly recommend going there before everyone knows about it and it becomes commercialized. We have been twice and other members of our family have been almost a dozen times over the past 6 years. If making the trip we would recommend staying at the Iberostar or Paradises over the Secrets Excellence. This trip we went to Secrets and spoke to tons of guests. Those who are well traveled and one couple who are both in the industry themselves have concurred with the following impressions about the Secrets property.

PROPERTY: The grounds were pretty. The best thing they have going for them.

STAFF: Were not accommodating for the littlest of things. Very few showed signs of pride or pleasure in what they did and in helping the guests.

ACTIVITIES: Long, beautiful pool, very nice outdoor game area with pool, basketball, tennis, archery, darts, and board games for rainy days. Shows were average. Horseback riding is OK-path runs parallel to beach under palm trees and passes through an area used as a dump.

ROOMS: Took 3 days to get air conditioning. They often put beds together instead of what you booked. Jacuzzi in room is nice.

RESTAURANTS: Food was fair. Nothing gourmet about it. To say that service is slow is a kind understatement, even just for drinks.

COST: Not worth the money. Can do better in the Dominican.

LOCATION: Long drive to destination from airport by way of unpaved dirt roads riddled with potholes. One hour plus trip. Bring medicine for motion sickness.

LANGUAGE: Spanish only! Hardly ever any attempts for the workers to learn or understand English.

SITESEEING: Excursion trips can be fun. A great way to get a real sense of the culture.

Our overall impression is that the property simply is not managed. It is what it is. If you want an all-inclusive that has food a bit better than Mexico, you can speak Spanish, and are so laid back that you don’t care much about regular frustrations for simple needs- then this place is right for you.
