Dominican Republic Hotel & Villa Reviews

Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada All-Inclusive 03/21/2006
Reviewers Rating: Good
We stayed at the Occidental Allegro Playa Dorada. This is where we planned our wedding and my invited guest amounted to over 30 people. My travel agent told us we would have bottled water continuous but little did we know we had to bring our own bottle. Traveling with Air Transat was the cheapest way to fly. We arrived very late after 1am, delayed over an hour and of course we were all tired and on edge.
Arriving there, there was no water for us. We asked the guy at the reception desk and all he could say was "tomorrow". He smiled and kept his cool and kept replying "yes tomorrow".
I received the run-around to get my wedding started. My travel agency, who represents Air Transat, told us they would take care of the extra's for our wedding and that all we had to do was pay only the basic, which was $820.00 US. NOT TRUE. My wedding planner/guest service spoke smoothly and we ended up playing an extra $460.00 US dollars for my extra guest. Extra money we did not have, so all my guests agreed to pay the extra $20 each. Now this is an all-inclusive resort. Get this.... that 20 American dollars payed for hors d'oeuvres and a larger cake. As for our meal, it was considered one of our tickets to eat at the restaurants. Which means they gave us 3 tickets to each a-la-cart anyways.
I have to say the service at our supper was the best service I have received anywhere... Our orders were taken promptly and we were served all at once not long after we ordered. It was excellent service. Thanks...
Another extra added payment we were required to pay was.... $90.00US. My Husband had been waiting for me to come down and our wedding planner tells him he couldn't get married... "big problem", To his wide eyed suprise, "what now?" They told him that his passport did not match his birth certificate. "What!" He didn't have his middle name on his passport. The judge said he had to correct it and it would cost us $90.00. Of course he proceeded and we had a lovely wedding. Mind you, we had our own ceremony, then the judge did his one minute thing. The rest of events was taking pictures by my friends and our photographer. She couldn't take photos for crap. My friends took better photos. (And this is what we payed for). Now,...We had already payed the consulate to stamp our papers in order to get married there and that cost us $640.00US dollars. I thought that meant everything was all cleared for us to get married there. Not true....Later when I approached the wedding planner/guest service and argued our point... they still insisted that we pay the judge 90.00 dollars. They had sent an e-mail to the Canadian Consulate and of course we got the brush-off again. "It was the translation's problem" They had to read our documents first then spamp it...Hello!!!
The documents needed to be translated and the could would have been $40.00 US each and there is 4 for me and 4 for my fiance. 40.x 8= $320.00US.
This is all to say we received a lot of suprised fee's and extra costs just to be married in the Dominican Republic.
If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me... I'm a person who gives the benefit of the doubt and don't mind paying if necessary but I don't like financial suprises. I felt the Dominican people will soak you for all you got. So make sure to cross your t's and dot your I's... or you'll PAY!!!
I have lots of good things to say but too tired of typing... ;0)
