Occidental Grand Flamenco Puerto Plata All-Inclusive
03/15/2005
Reviewers Rating: Good
This report is written by a person who has spent many years in the hospitality industry including owning a motel. Recently my wife and I traveled to Puerto Plata and stayed at the Occidental Grand Flamenco. This hotel is a 4 1/2 star which I felt after being there it should only be a 3 star. On arrival we were told we had to wait a couple of hours to check in. Our baggage was left outside in the rain. They finally checked us in. When we got to the room the room smelled and the cupboard was impossible, it stank so bad. I complained to the desk manager who didn't seem to be interested and said "see the hotel service desk the next day". The service desk changed our room on the third day. Cupboard had the same smell but if the cupboard door was left open the smell goes off. Went to use the TV and the remote didn't work. It needed a battery. Took it to the desk and was told to come back in 2 hours and get it. I went back but found they gave it to another room. NEVER GOT ANOTHER ONE. New Years Eve was a washout. At 12:15 many people went to bed with their children only to find at 12:25 the management started the fireworks. A lot of us missed that, especially the kids. The buffet is very small and the selection was not the greatest. The food was greasy and the selection never changed much unless you liked chicken every day. Never ask for bacon in the morning. THERE WASN'T any. Want a snack at night FORGET IT. They even stopped the popcorn machine at 6p.m. After supper you can have Pizza until 10 p.m. then everything is closed down. There are no special seating at the buffet and the service is poor as we had to get our own silver, water, and drinks some of the time. Ocasionally there were people standing in line waiting to get in. If it was raining you had to walk through the rain to get in as they kept the only other door closed. Two or three of the guests we talked to had water in their rooms when it rained. One couple moved 3 times. Another family mopped up the water with towels. Another couple had the same problem as well. I personally had a bad fall into the lobby pool (no safety barrier) because of water on the floor. I had a swollen hand and injured my elbow. I reported it to the desk who weren't interested and did nothing about it. We complained to Sunquest Holidays head office. They did not bother to reply to us. The only person to take any interest was Leidra, the Sunquest rep at the hotel. She went out of the way for us to solve the problems as well as helping the other guests that complained. This hotel belongs to the Occidental Group!!
