Dominican Republic Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews Reviews
Sosua Bay Hotel 02/14/2004
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
Just returned from 2 weeks (Jan. 13-27/04)at the Sousa Bay Resort. We chose this restort because of previous excellent reviews. We have travelled to many southern destinations and this has to be one of the very best holidays that we have experienced - 5 Star all the way. The food was excellent - so much variety. The buffet was great with an excellent selection - Peking Duck, roasted turkey, steak, lamb, roasts, shrimp, lobster, scallops, Chinese food, a great pasta bar, salads, fruit, cheeses, smoked salmon, deserts, sandwich bar, eggs made to order, etc., etc., We really enjoyed the 3 a la carte restaurants which were quiet, relaxing and more romantic with great choices.
The Tex-Mex (El Patio) had the greatest back ribs and taco salad. Make sure to book these restaurants at least 2 days in advance to get earlier dining times. We got better exchange rates for US$ than Canadian (50 DR pesos per $1US and only 30 DR pesos for $1 Canadian. It is better to convert US$'s to DR pesos. Safety deposit box was $15 US per week or 540 DR pesos = $10.80 US. Go to Virginia's for a 1 hour full body massage (to right outside main loby. Cost is 540 pesos ($10.80 US or $15 in US$'s
The resort has 2 cascading pools, nightly entertainment, about 5 bars with brand name liquers and liquors - everything except Canadian Rye. They even had clamato juice and made great bloody caesars. There is the greatest coffee and tea bar in the lobby - Espresso, Cappuccino, Earl Gray teas. At night this becomes a bar as well. There is a nice quiet place off the Loby to sit under the stars to enjoy these various drinks in the evening.
They have the most amazing huge whirlpool at the far side of the Tex-Mex restaurant. Don't miss it.
The staff are friendly and go out of their way to make your stay pleasant. A $1 or so tip means so much to them and they are so appreciative. We would cetainly recommend paying the extra for the oceanview room. Building #3 is all ocean front so requesting a room in this building is certainly worth a try.
There was a bit of political unrest and there was to be a 48 hour workers strike the day after we left. Fuel was rationed and SkyService had to stop for refuelling in Bahamas. Elections are suppose to take place in May and the president wants to change the law so that he can run for another term.
We will definitely return to this resort in 2005. Great value - Great People - Great Hotel - Great beach - Great food and Great service
