Sandals Royal Caribbean 04/27/01
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
As a follow-up to my earlier post, we went to Sandals Royal Caribbean in late January. The previous year, we had gone to Sandals Montego Bay. The Royals Caribbean was a very nice experience except for the weather we had - only a half day of sun. All other days were very cool, windy, rainy and gray, so that limited activities.
We were in a 24 hr. concierge room on the far side of the resort (by a pool and hot tub). The room were nice with a stocked bar, nice balcony (2nd floor). The pools and tubs were immaculate, with someone always working on them. We found the restaurants quite good (a little better than Mo'Bay) with nice variety. The island restaurant, which we ate at last year when at Mo'Bay, burned down. I believe it was Indonesian or similar, however, when we went last year, the food was not too good, so I do not think you will be missing anything by it not being there.... Lunches were buffet style with lots of variety. We ordered room service breakfast a couple of times and it was good, although the orders were sometimes mixed up and delivery was slow.
The grounds, like all Sandals, were beautiful with lots of lush vegetation and flowers.
The bars are good, although service can be a little slow. We found the best drinks made by the beach bar, particularly the frozen margaritas. Red Stripe beer, although good, gets a little old after 3-4 days and the bars sometimes ran out of Miller Lite...
What else... the beach area is very nice, although not quite as nice or big as Mo'Bay. Airport noise is still ever-present, but a bit less loud than at Mo'Bay and one gets used to it pretty fast. The resort atmosphere is a bit more sedate than Mo'Bay, with more of a mix of ages - young to old. We're in our 40's and felt a bit more comfortable here than at Mo'Bay, which has a decidedly younger crowd (and much noisier!) Royal Caribbean is a little more private and it is a bit easier to be left alone if that is what you want.
We have booked to go back next year to Mo'Bay and after that, will probably try some other islands - I hear St. Lucia Sandals is very nice (both) and Antigua. I wish Sandals had a resort on Barbados because we would really like to go there...
