Sunset Beach Resort & Spa 05/02/01
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We spent 10 days in this resort at the end of april. All in all it was a good place to stay, especially on a value for moneyx basis.
Staff very good, friendly. Although a no-tip policy is in place i saw guests tipping and staff accepting. However, no staff member gave any hint of expecting a tip.
Food is o.K. (Meaning not excellent). 4-6 Main courses. Beach grill is fine. We would have expected much more from an italian restaurant - however, we are europeans and our favourite is italian so we may be a little bit picky. Expect to eat exactly the same the second week if you are there for more than one week.
Some advice for vacation planners:
if you want sand & sea but nothing else, go to negril. The resort has three (+1 - "natural") beaches. Yes, they are tiny but we always found space for us.
The same aplies for water motor sport enthusiasts. The resort is situated in a marine park, which means that jetskis, etc., Are prohibited.
Time your arrival, if you can. It is best to arrive in the afternoon or evening (after 4 p.M.) Otherwise you can expect waiting for your room four hours. Nevertheless, they are aware of the problem. You can leave your luggage in the lobby, place your valuables in a guarded place, change and shower in the changing room and go to the beach (or the bar). The same facilities can be used after check-out. Our plane left at 8:45 p.M., So we actually had a full extra day after checking out at 11 a.M.
If you plan some trips in a rental car, take into account that the hotel is on the "wrong" end of mobay. It means you always have to cross the city to get to the popular places such as rose hall, dunn's river falls, etc, practically everything east of mobay. On the other hand, it's ideally situated for trips to the west our south.
Book the chinese and italian restaurants 2-3 days in advance.
Bring your own glass if you want to avoid visiting the bar two frequnetly. The plastic caps they use are tiny. (Especially for beer).
Consult your travel guide beforehands. We were not impressed at all with the selection of the package tours. If you wanna see many places consider renting a car. It's rather expensive, but the tours are not cheaper at all.
Calling europe is very expensive from the hotel. Go for the public phones. (There are some even there.)
