Sunset Beach Resort-Montego Bay 05/04/01
Reviewers Rating: Great
We just returned from a beautiful stay at Sunset Beach. We vacationed there from April 27- April 30, 2000.
We travel quite frequently and found this resort to be one of the most relaxing places we have been.
The check-in was a little time consuming. We were directed to have drinks while our room was prepped. We didn't mind the 20 minute wait.
The room decor was fine. Floors were ceramic tiled, cable, patio doors, bathroom was mediocre. Nice Gardenview. A few Geckos got in the room but they did not make us feel uneasy.
Thee water activities were limited. We took advantage of the 2 man peddle boat.
It was about 90 degrees. The sun hid from us for a fews hours each day so the water temperature was cool. We did secure a tan.
The Beach Grill
Open from 10am-7pm and closes at 7pm and reopens at I believe 10pm. Always pretty busy until the restarant opened. The menu is as follows:
Jerked chicken
Fried hot dogs (w or w/out cheese)
Grilled cheese
Hamburgers/Cheeseburgers
French fries
The Banana Walk
Opens from 7am-11am and closes to reopen around 5 or 6pm for dinner
Menu changes daily:
Fruits
vegetables
Tacos
Conch (island dish)
Mackeral in cream sauce (island)
Fried fish
Omelettes made to order
Home fries
Make your own toast
bagels
French toast
Sausage/Bacon
Sauteed Liver
Rice and beans etc,.
There is also an Italian Restaurant and Chinese restaurant which is sectioned off from the Banana Walk. You need to make reservations as soon as you check in. Seats are limited. After check-in I tried to book Chinese for our second night there and there was a waiting list. Although we walked by the restaurant approx 45 minutes into the seating--there were a few seats available. ( Oh well)
You need to bring your own mug/cup for beverages whether alcoholic or non. The plastic cups are sooooo small and you have to get up (a lot). You can purchase a "Sunset Beach Resort" mug for $15 USD.
My boyfriend told me to make a note on this site about the drinks. We noticed that the drinks appeared to be watered down including the Red Stripe Beer. You need 5 drinks to 1 US drink. However, if you ask for double, triple, quad the amount or straight, they will accomodate you without a problem.
We journeyed into the downtown area on our next to last day. We had Ackee & Saltfish with dumplings at The Pelican on Gloucester Avenue (approx. 3 minute walk from Margaritaville). Paid about $15USD to get into town. It was about a 15 minute ride. There a few locals waiting outside of the resort that will drive you into town for a less than a cab. He did not accept any money until he came back to pick us up and returned us to the resort.
Picked up a few souveniers there and walked around for about 15 minutes.
We played pool, danced to the CHA-CHA-CHA, Electric slide and a slow dance. Walked around a lot, sat a lot, and admired the view.
NOTE:
This resort is not recommended for teenagers or Spring breakers unless they are going to travel into the downtown area each night for the activities.
We would visit again in a heartbeat. We did not want to leave.
