Couples, Negril 07/05/01
Reviewers Rating: Fair
We visited Couples Negril in Jamaica, the first part of May, 2001. This was our second time to Jamaica, previously having stayed elsewhere.
In short, I would say that the service at Couples Negril was the worst of my life. We took my husbandās parents for their 70th birthday. We really wanted this to be memorable for them. We'd told them about the friendly people and the pampering and terrific service we'd had previously in Jamaica and since Couples advertises this too, we were expecting nothing less.
What we got were rude people at every corner, from the moment we got off of the bus, we were left standing there. Finally, someone came over and told us to step into the piano bar, where we waited and waited. They came in and told us our rooms would be ready in 45 minutes. We ate lunch, came back and waited for two more hours! The front desk was completely unorganized. No one knew what they were doing. It was a nightmare; youād try to talk to someone and they would just say, "Oh, don't worry about it, itās no problem." Sure it was no problem for them, they didn't care! There was no system, no sense of direction to anything they did. We kept telling them that we needed our two rooms relatively close to each other, since we were traveling together. We were promised this, yet our rooms were on OPPOSITE ends of the resort.
We basically lost most of that day of our vacation because they also didnāt know how to deliver baggage to the rooms. It took them two hours to get ours to us. We tried to talk to management and all we got were excuses and pass-the-buck comments instead of apologies and solutions. We finally got settled into our rooms by seven pm, with luggage. Basically that whole day was ruined. Not exactly the stress free vacation we had hoped for for ourselves AND our parents.
Remember that when they say, "We'll be there in ten minutes," it means about two hours. Apparently, they canāt tell time either. Anytime we wanted our luggage, or towels or pillows, we'd call and it would take several calls to get the towels delivered and it always took a minimum of two hours.
Beach-Red-Flag Service that we read about does not exist. We had our flag in the sand for over three hours. Not a single soul came by to take our drink order. The same went for most other couples there, too.
The watersports staff was so rude! We tried to talk to them about snorkeling and they looked at us as if we were talking about quantum physics. They told us they had a 3 pm snorkeling trip. We signed up for it and when we went to confirm that day, suddenly, the page they'd written our name on in the notebook didn't exist. No one seems to know what they're doing there.
No one speaks when you walk by. They acted like they were afraid they'd have to be friendly. Bar service was deplorable. I'm not sure what you have to do to get a drink. Even when you finally got their attention, it was clear that they only knew how to make the drinks listed. We asked for a simple dark rum with orange juice blended into it and you'd have thought we asked for the answer to the meaning of life÷unbelievable. Most of the staff, with the exception of Wedn. night in the Pavillion and Colin at Otahetie were rude and never seemed to be happy to be there.
I would not return here if they paid me. The service was truly horrible. One night at dinner we never did get our beverages! We were told that Couples is the lowest paying resort on the Island. The lack of worker morale shows.
We're pretty miserable that our entire vacation was so awful. It was such a shame since we took my husbands parents too. It was an embarrassment.
