Susnet Beach Resort & Spa 07/23/01
Reviewers Rating: Fair
My husband and I went to this resort in May 2001 (we are age 28 and 32) and we didn't like it much. In fact, we called our travel agent as soon as we could get into our room to see if we could be switched to another resort! When you get there, the open air lobby is very nice, beautiful, in fact. The ground and pool areas are also as beautiful and seemed nicely kept. We arrived around 11 am and we were told our room wouldn't be available until 3 pm. All luggage was kept in the lobby so it was difficult if you had to get stuff out of your bags. We got changed and headed for the beach. The beach was long but narrow. The water was nice, a lot of rocks so be careful and a lot of jelly fish. I was constantly looking around and didn't feel like I could relax fearing I would get stung by a jelly fish. But so far, we were happy and really liked the resort. The drinks were small, very small in fact. We didn't find them watered down at all...they were good. We didn't find the employees there to be that nice or helpful as some reported. The bartenders hardly said a word to us even when we tried to strike up a convo. and when we finally did get escorted to our room, the guy said nothing to us!

What we really didn't like about this resort was the room and the food, both terrible in our opinion. The beach grill had about 4-5 items, grilled cheese, hot dog, hamburger, french fries and jerk chicken. My husband had the hamburger which was very thin and tasteless and I had the chicken which was just okay. The seating area was a mess with food, napkins etc. on the floor and we had to wipe off our own table. We tried the so called lunch buffet and it was terrible! We have been to other all inclusive resorts and we know what buffet should mean and we kinda have a good idea as to what to expect. This buffet started out with salad. There was maybe enough salad in the huge bowl for two people and it was swimming in melted ice. There was curry chicken and lamb stew, boiled broccoli and one or two cold salads. They also had a sandwich bar which had meats that looked very bad. The meats were not stored properly (its very hot there, not on ice etc.) and the server didnt wear gloves. It was very unsanitary. There was one soda machine and 2 of the 5 choices were nothing but seltzer water (the soda was out). The dessert table consisted of a few dinner sized plates of cut up cubed cake and cookies. (It was very easy to skip dessert!) There were forks to serve yourself which were coated in dry cake. This too was not appealing to us. The buffet was very poor and we ate practically nothing. We were hoping that dinner offered better choices and was cleaner.

In reference to the room, we booked an ocean front room. The view from the room was actually beautiful but it was hard to get past the condition of the room! Not only was it out dated, but it was dirty! In fact, the hall way wasn't much better. The room was very old looking, the furniture was scratched up and not kept in good condition at all. The curtain that went across the sliding glass door was torn in different spots and the tie back was broken. The curtain also had visible finger prints all over it, as if someone was reading a news paper and had ink all over their fingers. Sections of the walls had the same thing and so did the bathroom.

When we booked this trip, we told our travel agent where we stayed in the past, it ranged from Swept Away in Negril to Breezes in Cable Beach Bahamas. We were told it was not like Swept Away but could be compared to Breezes. We loved Breezes so thats why we booked Sunset Beach. It was nothing like that. We knew it was not an upscale resort and we were not expecting that. However, we did expect it to be clean and the food to be at the very least, good. Luckily, we were able to get switched to The Wyndham Rose Hall not far away and for the SLIGHT increase in price, it was like night and day. I would recommend looking into this place too if you are thinking about Sunset Beach.

I don't know if our room was in the old section of the resort or not but it was not acceptable at all. We were told the buffet at dinner would be better but we weren't willing to risk it. We had already wasted most of our day in our room trying to make arrangements to get switched to the other resort and we just weren't willing to risk losing another day.

There are a lot of people that seem to like this resort. There are mixed reviews on this forum and on others. My husband and I really aren't picky people however, we feel certain things like cleanliness and a decent room and food shouldn't have to be sacrified just because your not paying a ton of money for a vacation. If the room was outdated, we really wouldn't have cared since we didnt plan on spending a lot of time in there but the fact that it was dirty just turned us off. Maybe the buffet was just bad that day, maybe it would have been better for dinner but the fact that it really wasn't clean and sanitary turned us off too. I hope this helps others who are thinking of going here. I'm not saying not to go here. As I said before, a lot of people seem to like it...we just persoanlly didn't. I would suggest looking into the Wyndham Rose Hall too, it was WONDERFUL! Thanks!
