Jamaica Renaissance Grande, Ocho Rios 11/15/01
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We stayed at the Jamiaca Renaissance Grande March 12 - 19, 2001. We had wonderful weather every day. We flew Air Jamaica and were on time arriving but almost 3 hours late on the return. The hotel is beautiful and every employee was absolutely wonderful! The bus ride to the hotel is a good 2 hours and is nerve wracking but look at it as a learning experience about the island. Every part of this resort has something to do. Our kids made hats from palm tree leaves, made pottery and also painted a jamaican bobsled. We were on the all inclusive plan and we do not like buffets but found that we ate more at the buffet than any where else - it was excellent! The roast beef with the horseradish sauce at the carving station was to die for. Rooms were just average hotel rooms but we were not really in the room except to change and sleep. We did tip people because they were so wonderful just the opposite of everything that we had heard. We walked the beach every morning ! sometimes with my husband and sometimes alone no one ever bothered us. We also walked downtown a few times but most stores sell the same things. People pestered you but no worse that in Nassau. There are 2 beaches one is more busy than the other. There are also 3 pools. There was entertainment every evening and a roving photographer to capture those special memories. The grounds are beautiful and watching the cruise ships come in every morning was beautiful! We swam with the dolphins at DOLPHIN COVE which has only been open about 3 weeks. The people there were very nice and everyone enjoyed it. From there we went to Dunns River Falls which is truly spectacular. It was crowded but very, very fun so much so that we went back again before we left and swam on the georgeous beach and took our time the second time. We also went river rafting and tubing on the White River which is only 10 minutes from the resort. We did not want to waste a whole day going to the Martha Br! ae - at first we could find no one who knew the White River but then in the South Tower there was a lady you could book it through. The road on the way up is in disrepair so it is hard to get someone to take you but we did finally find someone. The first time we booked through the hotel. The second time we went we did it ourselves and saved $50. As a matter of fact when we go back we will do everything on our own because it is a great savings! The White River Rafting takes about an hour. It was beautiful and if you go ask for Rambo or Dwight tell them the people from New Hampshire recomended them the nicest guys you could ever meet!!!! We saw birds, large crabs, fish - they showed us all kinds of plants - it was truly a great experience one that we will always treasure. My only disappointment was that i did not see the National bird although it was not from lack of trying! We loved everything about Jamiaca and its wonderful people - if you have any questions i would be happy to answer them. (Review originally submitted on March 21, 2001)
