Couples Negril 12/22/01
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We went to Couples Negril last year in November over Thanksgiving. We had a wonderful time and fell in love with both the resort and Jamaica. This was our first ever adults only all inclusive and we have decided that is the ONLY way to go! We arrived after the brutal ride from MoBay to friendly folks in a gorgeous Caribbean lobby with muted decorations--very classy and understated. We were given champagne and shown to the piano bar while our papers were being processed. It was dark so we couldn't see the beach but were so impressed with the lovely pool. The next morning, we woke early to find a picture perfect Caribbean bay with a lovely white sand beach. Food: Out of this world! Breakfast buffet was awesome--loved something called corn porridge. Also made to order smoothies and omelets. Very elegant terrace dining--if you aren't rich and famous, you will definitely feel like you are part of the upper crust here! At least temporarily until you go home :-(. Lunch was either another elegant buffet or burgers.jerk chicken, etc...by the pool. My husband would inhale two or three servings of chicken at a time while calorie counter me stared on in envy. (Still gained 5 lbs on the trip! musta been the ubiquitous pina coladas) Dinner was elegant at either the transformed beach grill which became a cozy little seaside restaurant at night with multi course meals or the terrace restaurant which became a la carte as well except on special nights. My husband hadn't brought the right kind of clothes (stubborn!) to go to the gourmet restaurant and we regretted it because we heard it was outstanding. I have read complaints about the slow service but this did not faze me--we had no where else to be! Water Sports: We were sorry we don't scuba because that is free and we saw and talked to people taking advantage of many great trips. We did go on a snorkeling trip. It was my first time and in deep water so I had to wear a life vest and had trouble getting used to breathing thru my mouth. But we saw some amazing things and now I am hooked--we have our own equipment. My husband is an accomplished water skiier and took advantage of that one day. We highly recommend the sport of laying on a raft and soaking up sun!!! One day it was windy and the surf was up. We had a blast body surfing with the rubber floats! Room: I wouldn't call it elegant but it is very nice and had a great shower with consistent water temp. and pressure. Nice balcony--not ocean view but lovely gardens! Who stays in the room on vacation anyway? People/Atmosphere/Service: This was a very classy resort with lots of people from different areas of the country and different countries to talk to. We met a nice older couple--man is a minister and wife is an early childhood teacher that we spent some time with. Lots of brits, germans, and canadians who were very nice. The service was incredible--the jamaicans are beautiful people--white teeth, always smiling, and friendly..will do anything to give you a good time. The couples were of all age groups--mostly honeymooners of course but a good variety. We had a massage (my first) that was amazing in a very soothing atmosphere. This is not a Party Hearty place by any means--you'll have to go to a club or Hedo for that. But if you like to relax, have a few drinks, and make friends with strangers, this was a great place to do it. We were miserable about leaving and when we got home began making arrangements for a 2nd trip to Jamaica. Super Surprise + to Grand Lido Braco--but that's another story. Couples Negril is a lovely, elegant place. I am enjoying writing this because I am returning on Monday (Christmas Eve) for a 2nd 9 day trip! This adds to the anticipation!
