Couples Negril 03/18/02
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
I love it!! First time ever in Jamaica and it was incredible. The bus ride was horrid, the bus was real nice though, was airconditioned but was strange being on the wrong side of the road and all. The road had several detours and the construction was horrible. Took us 2 hours on the dot to get to Couples Negril. Once we got there were greeted with a glass of cold champaigne, was wonderful and we paid for a gardenview room but were upgraded to partial oceanview without even asking (guess because we got married while there??) our room was 8205 and we had a GREAT view of the pond and gazebo and you could see the beach and ocean, was absolutly breathtaking. The balcolny was huge and the room was great. The bed was really comfy!!

The food was very good, our favorites were the omlettes and the bacon, VERY good. Plus we ordered room service breakfast everymorning and got coffee and juice with some fresh fruit and bananna bread (I can still taste the bananna bread, my mouth is watering) Lunch and Breakfast were always buffet but dinner was sometimes buffet and sometimes off the menu. We never ate at the fancy resturant because we were too relaxed in our beach wear to get dressed up. Request the window seats at the resturant, the breeze is better. Anthony the waiter in training is a real sweetie, he was always really nice to us. Most of the staff were very nice, but like everything else, some were not so nice. I found the service best at breakfast and lunch. When you go to dinner, order a drink first or else you'll be waiting about 10-15 minutes before you get one. Dinner was very slow getting your food, I guess because you order off the menu and it takes longer to fix but be prepared to wait on the nights it's Menu ordering. All in all the food was very good.

The only complaint I have about the drinks were trying to get a diet pepsi in the morning. They had the self serv open only until 10 am and every morning it was either out of ice or had bees flying around it (allergic to bees) They wern't real excited about getting you a diet pepsi in the morning. other than that, the bartenders were great and very nice. The Pina Coloda's were wonderful, they had premium brands of liquor such as Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Absolute, etc. Only Beer was Heiniken and Red Stripe, we stuck to the rum. They made these shot drinks called Flaming Bob Marleys (we were too chicken to try one) but they were red green and yellow and they set them on fire and you had to drink them through a straw. ALSO, pack a nice sized cup with you because the ones they give you are pretty small and the ones in the gift shop are $9 and aren't much bigger. Also a tip if you smoke, cigarettes were only $4 a pack (cheaper there than in KY) but the brands were limited, they ran out of menthol lights. The gas station across the street only had Marlboro Reds. You can buy them at the cigar shops at the shopping centers for about $3 a pack, the selection is bigger but still not very wide.

We were never bothered by people selling Pot on the beach. There were a couple guys that walked up and down the beach and you knew what they were doing and they didn't bother you unless you waved them over (which some people did) The people that stayed underneath us must have been their best customers because every morning they would start up while we were enjoying our juice on the balcolny and every night before we went to bed. YEESH.. I only saw one girl asking to do braids in your hair and that was our last day there, she was really sweet and didnt bother you.

The sunsets were beautiful every night and I recommend watching them from the hammocks at the right side of the beach. Breathtaking!! We loved it!

We were married on Monday at the gazebo and we purchased the 24 picture wedding package, they gave us one free. The album is very nice and the pictures are great. we were married at 1pm I recommend if you get ocean pictures to get married anywhere from 10-1 because that's when the water looks the best, it gets darker as the sun goes down and doesn't look as good in the pictures. We were married at the gazebo and had picures on the beach also. They also had a photographer walk around in the late afternoon and evening taking pictures of you if you want and you can purchase them for $8 the next day. We bought 3 of them, they turned out really good.

On my wedding day, I had my hair done by Doreen and she did a great job, she also did my free massage 2 days later and did a great job with that too. It was pretty hot in the Massage room so I recommend getting it done first thing in the morning when it's the coolest (still was about 82 though) When you go to arrange your free massage be sure to tell them it's your free massage, I told them we wanted the Couples Massage and that one costs $170 (yeesh)

On Tuesday we took the Negril Hi-life tour which ended up being just us. (it was $30 extra pp) well worth it. Leslie was our cab driver, he was a trip. He took us all over Negril and we saw an absoloutly breathtaking view from the top of a hill. All you could see was ocean all the way around, it was unreal. Then he took us to some shops and Ricks Cafe (if your young and into the MTV sceen then you'd like Ricks) were in our 30's and pretty laid back, wasn't our kind of place but the view was beautiful. Rocky cliffs and crystal blue water below. Awesome!

Wednesday I took the free shopping trip that Couples offered, it was pretty nice. Got some great deals on t-shirts 4-$18 for the real nice ones. Coffee and Liquor were cheaper at the shops too rather than on the resort. Grand Lido had a real nice gift shop but they were expensive!! RUI had a duty free shop and their gift shops were sort of blah. Be ready to be stared at the whole time you are shopping, they have girls in the shops that follow you around, I guess theft is real high or something, but it made me uncomfortable, I just handed over my stuff as soon as I decided that I wanted it and by time I was ready it was all waiting for me in a pile at the register. You can also bargain with the shop owners, not the girls for bargains. I talked them down on beach towels and a few other items that I bought in bulk. (coffee, dolls for my neices, magnets, etc.)

We went snorkeling one day and that was fun too. I used a Fugi disposable underwater camera and my pictures came out great. I also used a Kodak and those weren't as good. The Fugi took sharper pictures under the water and you can see everything very well.

Over all it was everything we expected and more. We were there 7 days and was probably 2 days too long. We started getting home sick after 5 days (missed our dog and cats) but definitly want to go back one day. I highly recommend it.
