Sunset Beach Resort and Spa 04/24/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
My husband and I stayed at the Sunset Beach Resort and Spa in mid April of 2002. We had done extensive internet and travel book research before we booked and I must say that this resort did not dissappoint us in any way. Having previously stayed at several all inclusives we knew we wanted to go this way for our 4 day get away. No kids this time. Since we were there in April there were not a lot of children but if you have children there is plenty to keep them busy and the resort is large enough that if you don't want to be around children there are usually places you can go to avoid them. The beach was nice, more a lagoon with very little waves, clean and adequate although a little narrow. There are no motorized water sports allowed but there are kayaks, paddle boats, etc. The snorkling is good for a beginner but there's not a lot to see. You can walk a long way out before deep water so this would be good for children. The beach is a little rocky. Lots of comfortable beach and pool chairs and palapas. The grounds are nice and clean but not elaborate. The resort is a little worn but everything is clean. Likewise the rooms. We were placed in a first floor room which looked out over the superstructure of the lobby (i.e. large metal support beams) and when we asked for another room we were told we could move the next day and this went off without a hitch. We received a room on the 10th floor with a lovely bay view. The food is nicely prepared and there is a good selection each day, lots of fish and seafood. The reservations restaurants are a step above and the Italian is especially good. The service was good, prompt and polite. Drinks were the usual tropical with few top shelf liquors and the beer was Red Stripe on tap. Evening entertainment was surprisingly good with the house band having quite a good variety and each night there was a different sort of extra entertainment. One night cash bingo, another karoke, talent show, Elvis impersonator, etc. It was slightly campy and thankfully no one took themselves too seriously. The guests joined in and all ages appeared to being having a great time. There is also a disco which stays open until 2 am and seems to cater more to the 18-30 age group. The resort is gated so there is no one there except guests and employees. The gift shop is even good and has reasonable prices. A craft market sets up 2 times a week so you don't have to even leave the resort is you don't want to. It is only a short ride from the airport. Finally the spa is quite good and extremly resonable. We would go back today and highly recommend this resort ito anyone looking for an outstanding value. We reserve an excellent rating for hotels with more luxury services but this one should please most anyone.
