Hotel Riu Tropical Bay 06/03/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
We just returned from the Riu after our 1 week stay (May 25-June 1). We had a lovely time & would recommend the resort & Negril to other travelers. We were upgraded to an oceanfront room due to some flooding at the resort the week previous. The room was relatively spacious & the housekeeping staff kept things immaculate during our stay. They not only cleaned the room, but tidied up as well. The beach was nice. Because of the storm the previous week, there was some debris early in our stay. They quickly filled in sand that had been washed away & the beach looked great by the end of the week. They do NOT have beach umbrellas which disappointed me, but they had planted palm trees near the water to provide shade. The water was crystal clear with good visibility, probably around 70' & 80 degrees. We dove 4 days using the resort's dive center, Scuba Caribe, & were very satisfied with their services. The divemasters are good tourguides underwater & very amiable. They are planning to buy a larger dive boat, but are currently using a large fishing boat with a removable ladder & a sunshade. The food was okay & really our biggest complaint. It was a little heavy & greasy, but there was plenty of it. The pizza place was good, although the service in the dining room was much better & faster. The staff, in general, were pleasant, friendly & accomodating. We had few problems & those we had were solved quickly. During our week stay, we did lose power several times. The alarm clock we'd brought was little help as a result of the power outages, but the wake-up calls were always on time. In addition, make sure to bring bug spray. The mosquitos & sand fleas are vicious & the resort only sprays for bugs once a week.
