Couples Negril 06/09/02
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
My husband and I just returned from Couples Negril (6/2/02 - 06/9/02), we had a fabulous time. The resort met all of our expectations and we are fairly particular travelers, especially when it comes to beaches we can be hard to impress being from Florida. The resort to us was just the right size with everything in just close enough proximity to not make you feel as though you must walk around endlessly just to get from one place to another. That being said here are some highlights... BEACH Bloody Bay is awesome! The water starts out shallow and you can walk far out into the water before it becomes deep. It is very calm and crystal clear blue. There is no seeweed or debris in the water, and the water is quite warm. I liked the stretch of beach occupied by Couples best (it is right between Grand Lido Negril and Rui Tropical Bay) I say this because Rui seemed crowded to me and Grand Lido appeared empty. Plus it seemed odd to see women with no tops on amidst children at the Rui resort?? Couples had just the right amount of trees, hammocks, chairs and enough space between all the above not to seem to close to other guests. They also have a very large roped off area for swimmers so that people who would otherwise approach to solicit their jet skis, parasailing ect must stay outside of that area. I imagine all the resorts have that though. FOOD Breakfast Overall the food was very good. We ate mostly at the Cassava Terrace which has an extensive breakfast buffet each morning. There is definitely well over and above an adequate number of things to select so as not to get bored. Made to order omlettes (egg white omlettes too), fresh pancakes, amazing amounts of fresh fruit (can get smoothies), bacon, sausage, some type of potatoes each day that varied, jamaican specialties that changed daily, vegatarian selections, unbelievable selections of assorted pastries, breads, cereals and more. Lunch - we ate mostly at Cassava again for this and this was also a buffet and offered excellent varieties of hot and cold foods. There was a salad bar faithfully each day for lunch, hot selections of assorted meats, fish, pasta, vegtables, stuff to make sandwiches, soup, and an amazing assortment of pastries to choose from for dessert even including a hot dessert item. Lunch really was good and something to look forward to, one day they had a mexican theme which we really enjoyed. Dinner Cassava Terrace was a la carte most nights except for a few themed nights such as Jamaican, Mediterranean, and International which were buffets. The first two were great the third was just OK. Salad bar is available each night as well regardless of if meal is al a carte or buffet. The Beach Grill has a dinner menu as well however we never did eat there for dinner. The Oteheite Resturant which required reservations was excellent. This was our best a la carte meal without a doubt. Try to eat there early in your stay so if you like it you can return a second time. I had fish and my husband the beef, both were outstanding in comparison to other beef and fish dishes we had during our stay. SERVICE Expect the service to be a little slower then what you expect in the states and you will not be disappointed. Drinks sometimes took awhile depending on how busy. Plates were usaully cleared away right away as you finished which is nice, water was filled regulary and generally service was pleasant but we did make it a point to be kind to those who were serving us first. There did seem to be a genuine interest in if we were enjoying ourselves as we were asked by various staff frequently. POOl Very nice, pretty, large, two hot tubs, plenty of room and floats to go around. Swim up bar. GYM Adequate, nothing to write home about, no air condition and heard the one at Swept Away is way better. There are free weights and some machines. Personal Training available by apointment. SOLICITORS You will definitely be asked to by weed on the beach (and other places) and it's not like I thought it would be (that there would be alot of people milling around) it's just that the few who are WILL ask. They do take ONE no for an answer and did not persist beyond that. Keeping in mind we has limited exposure due to not going in town and taking the small plane ect. we were asked at least 6-8 times. BTW - We took Tim Air from Mo Bay to Negril and the 16 min flight was well worth it. Please email me if you have any more specific questions (I am tired of writing for now. We did Scuba, snorkeling, some fitness classes ect...so if you want to know about any of that or anything else I would be happy to help. adh2@cfl.rr.com
