Beaches Negril 06/14/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
We just returned yesterday. Our stay was from June 3 to June 13, 10 nights. 2 s, 1 child (8 years). First of all, 10 nights is WAY too long; 7 would have been completely sufficient. Room: Deluxe (the basic). Very nice, clean, etc. Typical hotel room. Resort in General: Very pretty; lots of lush tropical plants. etc. Very nice buildings that fit well with the setting. Layout is pretty good. Beach: Nice white sand. A little seaweed, but it's nothing that makes you say "yuck!" Beautiful clear water. You can't snorkle off the beach with the resort's gear; so, you will need your own gear. Lots of beach vendors, but they aren't pushy. Great assortment of watersports: Hobie's, windsurfers, trike; surfbike; water skiing; banana boat. Food/Restaurants: Here's the area of concern. Keep in mind that my son is a VERY picky eater. Also, my wife only likes p food: for example, potoates; not potatoes with sauted onions and green peppers. These two issues caused difficulty for us. Now, Beaches claims 5 restaurants; good choice for dinner, right? WRONG! 1 restaurant closes at 5 PM. (Now we're at 4); The Teppanyaki absolutely sucks; if you've gone to any Japanese restaurant in the USA, they don't even come close (food is NOT good) (so now we're at 3); Seville is only for s (so now we're at 2). That's right: 2 choices for us to go as a family. Having said that: the breakfast is very good; lunch is very good; and The Seville is excellent bordering on fabulous (it just befuddled us as to why the other restaurants couldn't be like the Seville). Activities: Beaches does a GREAT job here. They try really hard to make it fun: circus (no animals), magic show, beach party, bingo; I was quite impressed. During the day, they had all sorts of fun activities also. The Sega room is really great; it rained like a son of a gun one day and all the kids practically lived there. Tours: The tours were REALLY expensive. They had a nice selection, but dropping $100-200 was not really something we wanted to do. We went on a 2 hour shopping trip; stopped at the Crafts Market (very pushy vendors) and Times Square (ove - duty free). This cost us $20, just for the bus ride. Insects: Absolutely, do not forget the Off. The mosquitos are ferocious. At dinner one night, we had two separate families ask to borrow our spray! General: The first 4 or 5 days were nice; sat on the beach, etc. Then it got old. We felt trapped; no car, can't afford the tours; wanted to find a nice restaurant, but we were literally scared to leave. That's about it.
