Royal Decameron (Club Caribbean) 07/05/02
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
My wife and I stayed at the Royal Decameron (Club Caribbean) in early June and had a wonderful time. Like many of you, we had also read the message boards constantly and worried about our choice. We were SO happy we stuck with our original decision. We had a great time at the Royal Decameron.

I think the biggest difference between this place and other resorts we saw was whether you wanted individual cottages or a sky rise hotel building. If you like the idea of having your own individual cottage - you can't go wrong with Royal Decameron.

ROOM: We stayed in room #76, right on the beach. The room itself was nothing fancy, but had everything you needed. The roof never leaked even though we had a fairly hard rain one night. We were right on the ocean - beautiful view and we can pull lounge chairs right in front of the cottage. Nice large bed, two chairs, TV, A/C, ceiling fan, telephone, bathroom with glass block shower and seperate closet area. Since each cottage has its own water heater, the hot water would run out after approx. 8 minutes. Kind of cut down on the double shower. We ran the A/C the entire time and it stayed plenty cool. TV only had about 7 channels, but who cares, right mon?

FOOD: Food was good to excellent. The buffet was pretty good - lots of variety. Always had fruit and about 6-8 different entrees. Service was excellent. Both the Thai and Itailian restaurants were great. You sign up for those in the morning. They alternate which one will be open each day. We found the fish (red snapper?) to be too "fishy" tasting for us. The breakfast omeletes they would cook for you were great. And be sure to try the jerk chicken at the beach grill (12pm - 5pm). Awesome.

RESORT: We had no problems. The weather wasn't the best so didn't have much luck with the extra activities, but they have ocean kayaks, a ski boat, glass bottom boats, a sail boat, etc. They raked the beach each morning for extra seaweed but sometimes would not pick up the piles. The staff was very nice except for the people at the front desk who would smile, but were too serious and not very helpful. They were too business like, but the rest of the staff would help out. In fact, I heard many bartenders talk about how mad the new management and/or owners are. They had an after dinner house band start at 9pm each night, followed by an act, and a disco at 11pm. The disco was small and really didn't excite us. My wife severly sprained her ankle on the last day and the resort nurse was no help. The gift stores near the front of the resort had a good selection of items though.

BEACH: They have five (5) coves at the resort. Beaches were fairly good, but probably not as nice as Negril. Some rocks or reefs mixed in with the sand. Mixed seaweed also, but I didn't find this a problem. I snorkeled a little and found that you almost have to have water shoes because of the sea urchins and rocks. Saw some interesting fish though.

BARS: Except for the small plastic cups, we found the service to be good to excellent. We got to know a bartender names Paulette (?) - she sure treated us right. We were never pressured to tip, but did any way for good service. The drinks were NOT watered down - in fact they were plenty strong, but you had to keep re-ordering because of the size.

Overall we had a great time. We went through Apple Vacations and they were wonderful. Pat, the local Apple rep. met us at 230 pm each day at the resort to see if everything was going well. We also went to Ocho Rios for a shopping/craft trip, and Dunn's River Falls. The drive from Montego Bay was about 80-90 minutes on a very narrow road with goats and cows roaming the country side. Good time, mon.

Feel free to write if you have any specific questions about the place. We too were frantically searching for opinions when we went, so now it is my turn to return some favors. I'll have some pictures available as well. The weather was not the best while we were there - never got a good sunset, but others did.

I recommend the place as a middle-priced resort - nothing too fancy but a great time. Especially if you want to relax and not go where it is too crowded. We loved it and would go back in a flash.
