Coco La Palm Seaside Resort 11/19/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
This was my fourth trip to Jamaica and Coco La Palm made a great base from which to enjoy the many delights of Negril. Set back from the main Norman Manley Boulevard the hotel consists of attractive 2 storey buildings in very pretty well maintained, slightly 'maze' like tropical gardens. There are no signs of ugly concrete or long impersonal corridors. In fact you hardly ever see the fleet of housekeepers or any other guests going in or out of their rooms as each front door is quite private. The hotel offers various types of rooms from simple garden rooms (currently being refurbished as they used to be part of the 2 star Coco Inn but the hotel is upgrading itself to more of a 5 star resort)in secluded blocks through to luxury beach front villas. I stayed in a spacious ground floor room with 2 queen beds a large bathroom, dining table and chairs and a white wicker furnished private patio with sea view. They also offer King Size beds and all rooms have fridge, coffee maker, air con and fan. King size bed rooms looked a little smaller in size as they are designed for only 2 people not 4! The first floor rooms have the benefit of very comfortable sun loungers on their private balconies along with the usual table snd chairs. Rooms were kept spotless and the housekeeper even left hibiscus blossoms on the bed as if I were honeymooning! Plenty of fresh room and beach towels very day and a perfectly raked beach each morning! There is a large pool with an adjacent jacuzzi and a smaller adults only dip pool right by the beach as well as a hair/beauty salon, shop and art gallery. Complimantary waiter service breakfast and also evening meals are served on a terrace & open restaurant with sea views and lunch from a small beach bar with wooden picnic tables. Food is pretty good and resonable in price. Lunch around $7 and the nightly changing set dinner (soup & grilled local fish with vegetables & rice)from $11. The staff are very friendly and pretty efficient not under as much pressure as I have seen in other Jamaican hotels. This is not an all-inclusive hotel (the most they offer is MAP) and there are no organised activities, tour desks or watersports. However everything you could possibly want is available from along the white clean sandy beach. The hotel is too far to walk into the town($10 taxi to ATM) but you never really need to leave the beach as it takes the place of the road and you can walk up and down it choosing bars, restaurants, day trips, boat rides or watersports. In fact if you want to leave your shoes in your room you could easily stay at Coco La Palm for a couple of idyllic weeks and not need them until your return to the airport! All in all a very pleasant hotel that feels more like staying in a private villa than a resort. Just make sure that Negril is for you before you go as it is not ideal for people who don't want to mix or chat with the locals - best choose one of the luxurious strip hotels in Montego Bay!
