Sandals Royal Caribbean 12/28/02
Reviewers Rating: Good
If you are looking for romantic nights, relaxing by the beach/pool, and a comfortable room, this is NOT the place to go! My husband and I stayed at the Sandals Royal Caribbean Dec 6-13. The night before we left, we were upgraded from the Sandals Inn to the Royal Caribbean. I was very excited because I had read many wonderful reviews on this particular Sandals. Our room (#58) was quite a disappointment. It was TINY, the A/C did not work properly, the bathroom was very small - with mold all over the shower! I'm not a picky person, nor a clean freak - but mold? How many people used this shower before me?! The door to the room was all warped from the heat, thus mosquitos and even a lizard were able to travel freely in and out of our room. We had a pool right outside our door, but no bar. The main pool and beach were a short walk but were always packed (and much smaller than appears on their web site or brochure). Sandals is known for its romantic, honeymoon setting. But I didn't find this place romantic - there were constant activities going on and since the beach/pool area was so small, there was no way to get away from it! Food was OK, but it was the same menu night after night in the same restaurant. Other restaurants were much more formal (I felt underdressed in a summer dress!) The drinks were good - wine, top shelf brands, etc - however, it was tough to get a drink while in the restaurant. We often wouldn't see the cocktail waitress until after dinner was served. In short, if you get upgraded from Sandals Inn to this resort - it would (somewhat) be worth the money. But I would NEVER pay what they want for this location - I've been to much nicer hotels/resorts that cost half of what Sandals charges and those other resorts are much, much nicer. We've been to Jamaica quite a few times and so far the best resort is Breezes Runaway Bay - its less expensive, has much better food, larger beach/pool area, and much nicer guest rooms. (did I mention golf is right across the street and it's FREE?). This place is overrated and overpriced.
