Beaches Negril 01/28/2003
Reviewers Rating: Good
My wife and i visited Beaches Negril from January 9 through January 13 2003. The ride from the airport is 1-1/2hrs. The resort is nicely decorated and the gardens are nice.
First of all i will say that if you are looking for a Sandals setting you don't want Beaches. The resort is really geared for adults with younger children. We were traveling with family so options were limited.
When we arrived at the resort we checked in with the concierge who was alittle pushy. It certainly wasn't Saint Lucia (champagne, warm hellos, and generally a much better attitude). The suite concierge service doesn't really get you much extra. There is no 24hr. room service. The concierge also closes at 8:00pm.
Our room was nice. We stayed in the Beachfront 1 bedroom suite. this room is big and not necessary for just a couple. Take the honeymoon suite. The room isn't on the beach and the beach can only be seen through the trees and is barely visible. We were told by one of the employees that our room had one of the best views. He told us that some of the beachfront rooms have almost no view of the water or the beach.
The pools are nice. The main pool overlooks the beach. There could have been more rafts at the pool but the staff at the pool are fun and accomodating. The main pool bar is in the shade which works out when the sun gets too much.
The beach is nice and the watersports are o.k. There weren't any aqua trikes and when we asked why we really didn't get much of an answer. there were a few canoes laying around. We didn't get a chance to snorkel or try the scuba. When on the beach try to avoid the peddlers that wander onto the beach. They are alittle rude and pushy also they are allowed on the grounds of the resort one day a week to sell whatever they have carved or put together. This i didn't appreciate; if i wanted to shop i would have gone into town. When you tell them that you're not interested they get nasty and try to persist that you should buy.
The food was ok. We ate at The Mill, Last Chance Saloon, and the Cafe Carneval. All had a decent selection of food. Yet most was geared toward the kids at the saloon and the cafe. The nightlife was good, there is always a show or act being put on in the ampitheater. there is always music on somewhere and the bars always doing something.
OVERALL- the resort is ok. Our last sandals experience was at the Sandals Saint Lucia Golf Resort. There you are treated like royalty and there isn't a detail spared. Beaches Negril is a great place to get away if you have a young child and are looking to get into the sun and relax for a few days. But if you don't have children spend your money with a couples only resort and don't stay here.
