Holiday Inn Sunspree Montego Bay Jamaica 02/02/2003
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
I run a small company allowing people wishing to travel extra care and a travel companion. If you are looking for an accessible hotel in the Caribbean have a serious look at the Holiday Inn Sunspree in Montego Bay. Even though it is roughly 40 years old, they must have looked at accessibility issues. During our two week stay I saw twelve individuals in wheelchairs.
I was down with a client for two weeks this pass January 2003 and had booked another hotel in Ocho Rios that though advertised as accessible we could not get his chair through the door.
I should have gone back to the Holiday Inn since we had been their in April of 2002., and the client as well as myself had a excellent time. The staff and other guest have ëa friendlinessí about them I havenít felt in other hotels I have stayed in the Caribbean.
The rooms are clean, the staff and services friendly and efficient, activity staff are excellent and are willing to learn and allow people with disabilities to participate. Other activities that the water staff assist me with and help make it a first for the client, was the glass bottom boat, paddleboats and kayaks.
We also did the swim with the dolphins in Ocho Rios. At $129(US) per person (no breaks for attendant) starting with a nice 2 hour drive to see the sites you first stop at Dunnís Falls before your encounter. You also receive a lunch but you do have a lot of stairs going both up and down to get to the restaurant. The docks are all accessible and the person needs to be able to walk some stairs to get to the water. The staff was very friendly and helpful during the encounter. (DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE VIDEO $39(US) IT WONíT TRACK OR WORK WHEN YOU GET HOME!!!!) I even took it to a production company to see if they could get it to work and they were barely able to salvage the 9 minutes of the swim and nothing of the promotional aspect. *Note: the road down to dolphins cove was steep and once you are down it is sand. Though it was a great deal of work the experience was worth it for the client.
One thing to be aware of is there is no accessible vehicle in and around the area. You do need to be able to transfer and be flexible in some aspects. Rotary club seemed interested in looking at ways to increase its accessibility to the island.
Klaus (Assistant General Manager) and Winsome (Front Desk Manager) sat and listened and spent time in looking at ways they could improve. I feel that this hotel could really benefit both seniors and people with disabilities by giving individuals the ability to travel to a Caribbean resort.
