Couples Negril 09/10/2003
Reviewers Rating: Fair
My husband and I recently returned from our honeymoon at the Couples Negril resort. We visited this resort August 16-20, 2003. It was our first and WILL BE our last visit to Jamaica!!! It was a BIG disappointment, a wasted vacation, and money gone down the drain. We looked forward to a wonderful, romantic get-a-way. The ride to and from the airport was very tiresome, a hour and a half commute. This was rated a 4-Star resort by Air Jamaica. I've read several other positive reviews about this resort, on this website, which lead us to visit, a BIG MISTAKE. There were other couples there that were highly disappointed as well. The resort is in desperate need of improvement/renovation. After inspecting the resort, it is rather run down. Our travel agent and guest relations @ the resort that we'd receive a special honeymooner's gift from Couples Resort, which included: 1/2 hour FREE massage; a bottle of Champagne; and a t-shirt, FALSE and MISLEADING!!! We received the bottle of Champagne 3 days later and did not receive a t-shirt. When we visited the spa to make an appointment for a couples massage (together), we were told that it would be an additional $10.00 to have it in the same room. No one ever specified that. The additional money was not a problem, it was misleading. It is free only if you were in separate rooms. I spoke w/the Manager of Sales and shared my concerns w/him and he stated the same thing. I asked him to show us in writing, to no avail. We had a major problem with the key and lock to the entrance of our room. Another major problem that we experience was housekeeping entering our room during w/out permission or entering w/out the door sign on the knob. The water pressure was another issue that was a real headache. During a shower session, the water stopped completely while showering. The rooms were very musty and moist. Housekeeping provided us w/one washcloth each day. I overheard another couple complain about this as well. We lost electricity quite a few times. It rained every day, between 1-2pm, so it's good to enjoy the pool and/or beach in the morning. The resort had very little t.v. channels; at times they had problems accessing cable or it was out-of-order. Making telephone calls using a phone card is useless so don't waste your money on phone cards. Phone card telephone calls are blocked due to the fraud in Jamaica. We met a couple that was there from Delaware that are AT&T wireless customers and they had no problems at all while using their cell phones. The red flag service on the beach was a joke. You'd be better off going to the beach grill bar getting your own drinks. The staffer on the beach came over and told us to bear w/her because she needed to take dirty cups to the bar and have them cleaned. The game room was rather cheesy but we made the best of it. They had a broken jukebox that worked when it wished (very little music selections), 6 slot machines (3 broken), a pool table, and a ping-pong table. The night entertainment was for the birds. It was rather boring. The resident band was horrible rarely sang reggae. The beach party was very short. They really didn't have that many activities on the property; therefore, we were forced to hang around the game room and/or beach during the day and piano bar at night. The pool was never open after 8:00pm. They had a sign displayed stating that the pool was closed for treatment. Also, I was frightened by these creepy crabs called coconut crabs that lingered around the dark walk ways, steps to your room if someone had room service food and left plates in front of their door, and beach. We refused to walk the beach for a romantic stroll while the crabs were out. They came out every evening at dusk. I was very disgusted that I had to run back and forth to my destination, in high-heel sandals or dress shoes, with hopes of not falling. The food was displeasing. Majority of all meals tasted different from the ketchup, Pepsi soft drink, potatoes, eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, certain meats, etc. Every day I basically had the same exact meal...from 3 fried eggs and bacon for breakfast, grilled cheese and jerk chicken (scrumptious) for lunch, and a salad for dinner. At Otaheite (one of 3 restaurants-sit down dining/reservations only), the menu was scarce. You'd think at a lavish place such as this, you'd be able to enjoy a nice steak or shrimp or lobster dinner, not at this resort. The atmosphere @ this restaurant is nice, cozy, and romantic but the food...not that great. You're only allowed to visit this restaurant every three days...(is that what you call all inclusive). All and all, our vacation at this resort was fair. On a scale from 1 (worst) - 10 (best), I'd rate Couples "3". Bahamas was MUCH BETTER than Jamaica....my honest opinion!! Monique
