The good:
Generally the food was great, the drinks tasty and strong, the staff friendly, the entertainment excellent, and the scenery beautiful. I didn’t see any evidence of the bugs mentioned in previous reviews; our room was clean and comfortable. Snorkeling in the waters around the hammocks was a pleasant surprise, but be sure to get out during high tide (which seemed to be between 7-10AM during our stay). After that the snorkeling is still good, but you’ll have to hunt around for paths through the coral or end up scraping your belly or harming the reef. Ganja is readily available EVERYWHERE, but nobody around the resort was overly aggressive about it.
The bad:
The front desk staff was hit or miss. On one occasion they failed to make my wake up call and I had to scramble to make an appointment. On another occasion the girl at the desk refused to connect me to an outside line from the lobby, insisting that I go back to my room to make the call despite the fact that my buddy was asleep in the room. When I tried to politely explain this to her she put her head down and ignored me. Tip: buy a phone card in the gift shop. The connection fee is still 3 bucks a pop, but it’s better than just dialing out. I met a girl there who spent $180 on phone charges before she discovered how high the rate was.
The ugly:
Downtown. You can walk down there if you like; I doubt you’d be in any danger. But the town itself has really (expletive deleted) shopping and a few very persistent ganja dealers. Not to mention the walk along the road to town is pretty dangerous! I was way off on the side of the road and nearly got hit by a truck, no joke. We only went down there once… And the funny thing is that I found prices on booze, etc. to be about the same in the airport. Oh, and the gift shop has smokes but charge 5 bucks a pack! Bring a carton or buy elsewhere.
Would I go back?
Hell yeah! Honestly, I’ve been to a lot of places in the Caribbean and Club Ambiance is one of my favorites. Next time I better take my wife… ;)
