Spent a week in Montego Bay during September, 2004, previous experience here was just 1 day on a cruise. We considered the all-inclusives, but wanted to experience the island flavour and cuisine, and luckily we chose Doctor's Cave Beach Hotel as our base. This hotel is a great value, and we would definitely stay here again. Wonderful staff and management, location can't be beat. The garden rooms are very nice, and are away from the bar and nightly parties. If you want to party until the wee hours, get a room overlooking the pool/bar area. Kenny the bartender/activities mgr is excellent.
The great Doctor's Cave beach is across the street, beautiful sand and nice bar/restaurant on the beach. Much nicer than Ocho Rios. Margaritaville just down the street, along with many excellent restaurants. Again, the perfect location to wander from. You will encounter the Mo'Bay hustle on the street whether you are in a 5-star all-inclusive or another place.
Using Montego Bay as a base works well for seeing the rest of Jamaica. The hotel staff introduced us (4 couples) to a taxi driver (Wilson) who was an excellent driver and ideal guide. We took a day drip to Negril (excellent beach, Rick's Cafe on the cliffs also there (commercialized now, needed to be there back in the '60's). Small restaurant next door to Rick's has great food, much more reasonably priced - stop in Rick's to see the tree divers who gladly accept/ask for tips). Highly recommend a day trip to Negril, Margaritaville on 7 mile beach is a great spot to walk the beach from.
Also took a day trip to Ocho Rios. We all felt Dunn's Falls was a terrible waste of time, but the girls swam with the dolphins at Dolphins Cove, and this was a very memorable experience for all of them, highly recommended.
Wilson stayed with us wherever we went, always ready to take us to our next stop, and very cheap. I highly recommend seeing Jamaica this way, rather than staying in an all-inclusive "compound". You see the people and the villages, and you come away with a real sense of this island. We barely escaped Ivan, and feel terrible about the people who were left homeless after this hurricane. Before the trip I thought this visit would be our last to Jamaica, but after meeting the real people between the cities and experiencing all that we did, we will definitely return. And we will definitely stay at Doctor's Cave Beach Hotel because of the excellent staff, good food, great bar, and the perfect location of the hotel.
