Jamaica Hotel & Villa Reviews

Sandals Montego Bay All-Inclusive 04/05/2008
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We just returned from a trip to SMB from 3/23 – until 3/27. It was our 5th trip to Jamaica and our first to SMB. We had a great time. We really enjoyed having the Sandals lounge at the airport as well as the nice check in lounge once we arrived at the resort.
The first thing about the resort that comes to mind is the staff. With out a doubt this is the best staff we have seen in our five trips. You could not walk past a staff member without hear a pleasant hello. Everyone from the bartenders to the landscaping crew went out of their way to smile and talk to you.
The playmakers on the resort are outstanding! These folks all have great attitudes and really work to make your vacation as fun as you want it to be. The entertainment they provide is terrific and there is definitely something for everybody at this resort. No one works harder than the playmakers. We were surprised to see them working on some routines at 1:30 A.M. one morning after a long day and night of entertaining the guests.
We were also impressed with Horace the property manager. He made a point to personally come around during breakfast and ask everyone how things were for all of the guests. At the other resorts we have stayed at I could not begin to tell you who the manager was as we never saw them. I thought that was a nice touch. Several other days during the visit we saw him making the rounds seemingly just checking things out at the resort. & making sure the guests were happy.
For a Montego Bay resort the beach is VERY nice. It’s not the same as Negril but we did not expect it to be and knew that going in and much better than the other Montego Bay resorts we have stayed at. There is plenty of room for everyone to spread out with out feeling like people are on top of you.
The food was decent. We enjoyed the Oleander as well as the Italian restaurant quite a bit. The food at the buffet never seemed to jump out as outstanding but we are both fairly picky eaters so take that with a grain of salt. Needless to say, we never went away hungry.
Our room was nice but nothing fancy. Then again how often are you really in it? We stayed in the Oleander building. This was the most basic room offered at the resort. We had none of the air conditioning issues reported in some of the other posts. Our room was always at a comfortable temperature and it wasn’t loud. Maids did a great job of cleaning the rooms and even came back at night and redid the bed for a "turn down" service which was a nice touch.
As far as the planes go, yes they do make quite of bit of noise. However as may others have said you get used to them rather quickly. They are only an issue for about 5 – 7 seconds. This is really not a big deal at all. They seem to end after 9 P.M. and don’t start until about 9 A.M. the next morning as a rule. We talked with a lot of other guests about reviews vs. the reality of the whole plane thing when we were there. Every one we talked to agreed that the planes were not a big deal at all. People who make a big issue out of them must be more of the “chronic complainer” types. Give me the 7 minute ride to the resort from the airport for a little noise any time!
In comparison to the other resorts we’ve stayed in, the only thing I wish was a little different was the pools. I know this is the original Sandals resort but the pools offered are the “main pool” which is nothing more than a square style pool used for aerobics and volleyball and the swim up bar which is a bit on the small side. Chairs around the pools are a bit limited and tend to get taken early in the day. If you are a pool person, putting out a bag & your towels on the way to breakfast to reserve a spot is recommended. This was not a horrible thing by any stretch but if I had one thing I would change about this resort based on my having traveled to Jamaica five times it would be better pools.
One last bit of advice I've given ever since our first trip to Jamaica is to being your own mugs! Those little 8 oz. cup mean way too many trips to the bar. The staff will gladly fill them with out any hesitation. I can't tell you how many other guests asked us “where we got those big mugs from?” You could get some from the gift shop but they were about $12.00 US each.
I could go on but in the interest of space I’ll stop here.
