Great
A GREAT place to stay.
We were there from 15 January to 22 January 2001.
This was our 3rd Rex Resort to visit. We have been to the Rex Grenadian and the Rex Halcyon (Antigua). Both were also positive experiences.
The management is very visible and involved in all forms of the activities. We saw Edmond Sidonie (General Manager) several times and he was very involved in most of the activities at the resort.
It seemed that most of the Papillon guests were involved with the dinners and activities because it was an all-inclusive resort. Verses the Rex St. Lucian and the Rex Royal, that were a pay as you go resort. The beaches and the hotels are all connected. If one chose to eat dinner at the St. Lucian you would have $40 EC credit towards your meal. We ate all our meals at the Papillon.
The meals are all buffet and my wife enjoyed all the varieties that were offered on a daily bases. I have a problem with foods that have onions and garlic on them. The staff worked out a way that I could get my food prepared without having any digestive problems. This was really great.
They had a social coordinator (Lorna). She really tried to get a total involvement of every guest at the resort. She made a point to get to know every guest by name. This is a first at any resort we have gone to. Her supervisor, Cleopatra, was also very involved with many of the activities.
We attended a cocktail party one evening for repeat customers at the Rex Papillon. We were invited because we had been to two other Rex resorts. ALL the management was there to thank the repeaters. They really made you feel special. This is a first for any resort we have gone to.
Every morning my wife and I went for walks. We went through many neighborhoods. We figured we walked at least 5 miles each day. We never felt threatened. The only problem is to make sure you do NOT walk on the road surface. The roads are very narrow and only have room for cars. So those of us use to wide roads and sidewalks in North America need to keep this in mind. Also to remember to walk facing traffic on the shoulder is a smart move. Remember they drive on the left side of the road.
We went into Castries (the capitol of St. Lucia) via Route 1A mini bus service. It was fun. We got to ride with the local people and see what it is like to be immersed in St. Lucian culture. The cost was only $1.75 EC or about $ .70 US each way. We need to walk to Rt. 1A to catch the bus. But in most cases you didn't need to stand at a bus stop, they would pick you up anywhere along the route.
We toured the market area in Castries. We found a lot of items very reasonably priced. It was safe and enjoyable. We spent about a half a day shopping.
Pluses and minuses:
+ Clean well managed resort
+ Management involvement
+ Good service
+ Great beach location
- Need to have weeks itinerary handed out upon registration
- Need to figure out how to make tiles less slippery when wet
- Need hair dryers in ALL rooms
- Need more 110 VAC outlets in rooms for North American visitors
