Hotel Reviews: St. Lucia
Jalousie Hilton 10/12/01
Reviewers Rating: Great
My wife and I spent our honeymoon there the last week of September this year. Overall the resort was very relaxing, secluded and offered an abundance of romantic opertunities. The setting is definitely as beautiful as any postcard you could imagine with water clarity that is difficult to match. The staff were all very friendly and more than happy to share whatever knowledge of the Island they may have. The weather was good, with only a few thundershowers which passed quickly. Most of the other tourists were either American or British with a few other Europeans also. Not many children, but the school year had already started when we were there. The beach was perfect, with white sand and calm, clear, warm water. The snorkling was great with lots of fish & other marine life to see. We had an ocean view villa with a plunge pool which was very nice. After seeing the location of some of the other villas we were glad we had spent the extra money for the ocean view, it seemed a little more private. The plunge pool was a great way to cool off after comming back from the beach. The food was expensive and nothing to brag about at any of the restaurants, but the atmosphere was great and different at each one. Figure $15 each for breakfast, $20 for lunch and $50 each for dinner. Even still I think you would have a difficult time eating & drinking enough to justify the all inclusive plan.($175/day per person) We had planned to rent a car, but after seeing the roads changed our minds. They are very narrow and winding with many blind curves, pedestrians and animals to negotiate as well as driving on the lefthand side. Be prepared to see a lot of poverty on the 1hr+ taxi ride from the airport unless you take the helicopter. The Island is extremely poor and undeveloped. As a result we did not feel very comfortable walking around the towns by ourselves and forget any conveniences like accessable grocery stores or restaurants. This was probably the biggest disapointment for us, as we really wanted to explore the Island by ourselves but were relegated to staying on the resort most of the week. We did take a water taxi to Castries which was enjoyable and a good place to get T-shirts and such, but be prepared to say "no thank you" a lot. Also, don't arrange any water trips through the resort, you can negotiate a much better deal yourself down on the beach. Talk to Mark with "Mystic man" tours. Everything on the resort is priced in U.S. dollars and just about everywhere else takes U.S. currency also. Using E.U dollars and U.S dollars can be confusing.
