Hotel & Resort Reviews:
St. Lucia
Stonefield Estates 12/26/01
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
We stayed at the Plantation House for a week during November. The Plantation House, and some of the other smaller villas we saw, have great views of the Petit Piton and the Caribbean--(not all villas have views, check first) Its about 1/2 mile down a very steep hill to the nearest beach tho a shuttle will take you to the Hilton, and pick up about 3pm. The Plantation House is huge and for two people it is overkill but we took it because of the private pool. Other villas have use of the estate pool which is still very nice. I thought the restaurant was good enough and a great spot for an evening drink. The one and only problem we had was finding the food in the first place when we actually wanted to cook in the vast kitchen. I have never seen such an enormous kitchen so it was truly disappointing when we discovered that the Soufriere market is hopeless and there is no fresh meat, fish or milk in town. So, buy your food in Castries or View Fort BEFORE you come. The evening sounds of jungle critters was music to my ears but if you don't like it bring earplugs--there is no glass to any of the windows. The grounds are beautiful and the views stunning. The people on the estate are wonderful. Very helpful. We rented a jeep to explore the south and the rainforest but you could manage without renting if you just used the shuttle or walked down the very steep hill to the local beach. There is in fact a very quaint restaurant down there--great place for an evening drink. Or you could use taxis everywhere. We brought a kayak with us and paddled all around the Pitons and north to Anse Chastenet, and a few miles out. No whales but plenty of turtles and serenity. Did a lot of snorkling which was fun but not spectacular. (bring you own equipment, it will save you overpriced rental fees) Overall, I would rate Stonefield the most beautiful place I have ever been, and in fact beats Ladera for the view. Only La Haut Plantation tops the view, and that's the finest in the entire Caribbean, so say I. If you are looking for night life look elsewhere.
