Hotel & Resort Reviews: St. Lucia
Rex St. Lucian 01/29/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
We stayed at Rex St. Lucian end of January. Hotel was busy but neighbor hotels were not. Had the deluxe room in a separate building off to the side. It was an excellent location away from the pool area and a little quieter. Deluxe rooms have own separate lawn between rooms and beach equipped with lawn chairs and next to outdoor beach bar which was only open till 5 pm. Room was nice, typical wicker style furniture, king bed, pull out couch if required. The room had a great balcony with a great view of beach, Pigeon Island, and most of the bay. We spend many a late evening on the balcony listening to waves crashing on beach. Maid service was very good and they were very friendly and informative.

Food at Mariners restaurant was always good. It is a general buffet style and was part of the all inclusive so we ate most are meals there. There was always chicken, pork and fish at lunch and dinner with various vegetables and side dishes. The food was always prepared or served different (baked, grilled, BBQ, etc.) We were there for a week and did not get tired of it. We had access to Papillon next door but never tried any of their food. The Oriental restaurant was excellent, we ate there twice. They rebate about 80% for the all inclusive guests. Dress code in evening was definitely in effect, which we did not mind.

Nightly entertainment was good and included live bands most nights. There were some limbo demonstrations with fire a couple of nights. Lots of fun, beautiful lounge area.

The beach was beautiful with great sand and great swimming. Lots of water sports, powered and non powered. Some beach vendors, they weren’t a problem. Vendors in the vendors market were very pushy and we stopped going because they wouldn’t leave us alone while browsing.

We prefer resorts with no children and the Rex St. Lucian at this time had only a couple of families. We never spent any time by pool but it looked very nice and clean.

Drinks were o.k., we stayed with the local Piton beer which is pretty good. The all inclusive package means the cheaper house brands of liquor are used. Unfortunately I did not find the local rum to have much flavor. The house rye, depending on bartenders was usually a scotch of some sort…..not the same! I did however find a bartender who would serve Canadian Club but he was not always working.

All staff was excellent and very friendly, more than normal and more than expected. I would say it’s a St. Lucia cultural thing and not resort related.

The Rex St. Lucian was an great resort and provide us with a great vacation.

Peter
