Hotel & Resort Reviews: St. Lucia
Rex St. Lucian 04/24/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
My wife and I with our two girls (4 yr old and 7 yr. old) stayed at the Rex from 4-13 to 4-20 on the all-inclusive package. Rex St. Lucian was about 40% occupied so it was not crowded. Pappillon appeared even less populated and was partially shut down. For the price, Rex offered good value. It is a modest resort - shows some wear and tear but adequate. Some of Staff are friendly, others not. We stayed in a delux room which had lovley and large private garden - which is important for those who do not want to be solicited by persistent beach vendors. The beach is beautiful. The pol area is also quite nice but the pool is regular rectangle -nothing special. The food was good & plentiful - we ate at Mariners buffet most days - limited childrens menu. We went to Pappilon side where there is a grill for lunch - girls lioked the grilled sandwiches and freench fries. Do not expect gourmet but we did not eat in Oriental due to our youngsters. The Rex is strict with its dress code for evening. Bring some bug reppelant - one evening I had some mosquito attacks and on another occassion was bit by tiny red ants in the lawn - I must have been sitting near the nest. Be careful if you wander off the property - one evening 2 couples who were Rex guests were walking a few blocks from the Rex and were approached by two men who demanded money - the male guest foolishly pulled out his wallet and promptly lost $100 EC. There were no weapons brandished but the island has evident poverty and there is an increase in violent crime so be cautious when off the property. We went to the duty free in Castries one day by taxi - no problems. The Rex is well patrolled by security and the beach had Lucian Rangers as well. The beach vendors are persistent but generally friendly and take "no" except if you show any hestation they will move right in. Some of the crafts being sold were beautiful. Rex still caters mostly to Brittish, Germans and Canadians - a few Americans. On three days of the week the beach is the visiting spot for cruise ship passengers so it is a bit more crowded on Tue through Thurs. - if you want a good spot on the beach get there before 9:30am. Overall I rate the Rex as good value for the money.
