Excellent
June 17th-June 24th, 2002I just returned from my honeymoon to St. Lucia, where my wife and I stayed at the Hilton Jalousie, south of Soufriere.
Rooms:
We were able to get room #904, and let me tell you, the room and the view could not be better. All week, the shuttle drivers kept telling us how we had the best room on the lot. We had the most private plunge pool, and it overlooked Petit Piton, and the ocean with unobstructed views. All villa's and villa suites have plunge pools, with the villa suite's plunge pool being about twice as large. The interior of the rooms were well kept and decorated. We had fresh flowers in the room everyday, and flower petals on the bed almost every night.
Food:
Well, most of the reviews say it all. The Plantation room is their "nicest" restaurant, but the food is overpriced quite a bit. I would expect $50/60 per person there for dinner.
The Verandah is their breakfast area, and it's a buffet, at about $17. It has uite a selection, and as it's a buffet, you'll never go hungry!
The Bayside is located next to the beach/pool. It has a varied menu, with most things around $15. I loved the food there, and you can have it sent to you on the beach...so you can still get the sun :) On Friday's, the Bayside hosts the Calypso Beach Party, which is a buffet, and is about $39 per person. After awhile, there is a show, including dancing and some fire-manipulation (nothing like the Bang though).
The Pier is located at the far end of the resort, next to the Bang. It had the Italian Buffet Monday night, which was spectacular! I was so stuffed. It was $39 per person though. On other nights, it's an a la carte menu, and I personally thought the food was better there than at the Plantation room....and it was cheaper.
I'm going to throw in the Bang here, and while it's not part of Jalousie, it's right next to the Pier, and on Wednesday night, they host something called "Jump Up". It's a set menu, and includes a drink, appetizers, main course, and dessert for about $30 per person. The food was pretty good, but the acrobatics show, fire-eating and limbo was a load of fun. They bring people from the crowd up to eat the fire (I was one of them), and it was a blast.
Grounds:
The resort could not be more beautiful. It's nestled between the Pitons, and the whole thing might as well be a botanical garden. There are beautiful flowers everywhere, and unrivaled views from every location. It's extremely hilly, but the shuttles cart you anywhere you want to go, and they only take about 3 minutes to get you once you call. I'm 23, so I didn't mind the hills so much, but even I was sweating a little after making the trek from the beach to our room (at the top of the resort).
Spa/Tennis/Golf:
Our package included 2 free Caribbean massages from the spa, and 2 free back massages. All the massages were fantastic. There are 3 tennis courts, which are located right next to the spa. There was almost always one open for play. The golf course is not quite a course, more like a pitch and putt area. (I think 3 holes?).
Beach Area:
The beach is imported sand, so it always felt nice on the feet. The swimming area is also covered by the sand, so you don't have to worry about stepping on coral or urchins. There is a marine reserve on the north side of the beach, next to Petit Piton. The snorkeling was wonderful. I saw such things as moray eels, shrimp, spider crabs, turtles, tubefish, flounder, and lots more. The dive shop was great. They were very accomodating, and even went out with only my wife and I one day. Talk about a personal dive! The older divemaster was hilarious, and extremely knowledgeable about all the underwater life. He even showed me a frog fish at the Lesleen M wreck, which I'm told is a very rare fish!
Weather:
We were there from June 17th-June 24th, which is near the beginning of the rainy season. It rained for pretty much the first 36 hours we were there, and then it was mostly sunny for the rest of the trip, with short 10 minute showers once or twice a day. The temperature was probably around 85.
Staff:
All the staff were so wonderful to us during our whole stay. There are some people in particular that I'd like to point out. There's Wilson - one of the shuttle drivers. He was always quick to pick us up, and always greeted us by name. He even offered to pick us up at the airport next time we go! There was Leon - He's one of the waiters on the beach. He always made sure that we had everything we needed and always had time to stop and talk with us about island experiences. Make sure to have him make you one of his drink specials! At the dive shop, the older divemaster was always funny, and calming for the newer divers.
Overall, this was the best travel experience I have had in the Caribbean, which includes St. Croix, Tortola, Antigua, Cayman Islands, and Jamaica.
