Stayed 3 nights, January 2002Clean, locally run and centrally located in Rodney Bay -- this small and inexpensive hotel is in a good location, just a 5-10 minute walk to the beach. If you want to save money and if you can sacrifice the beachfront location --- this spot will work nicely for you. On 'beach days' we would pack a small bag, make the short walk to Reduit Beach (just beautiful) and set up camp in rented chairs and umbrellas for about $15 for the day. Except for a pool and hot tub, pretty much all of the 'services' you'd find in a beachfront resort hotel were available on the public beach. (No changing rooms or bathrooms, but a couple of restaurants nearby) Local women would occasionally amble by and ask if we'd like to buy a Piton, or soda....and return with a cold one for a reasonable price. Even lounge chair service! There are very nearby reasonably priced restaurants for lunch. We would set up right in front of the beachside restaurant, and that way we could step inside for lunch, or a quick drink, and not have to pack up our things on the beach.
Swimmming can also be had at the Candyo....though the hotel pool is not pretty to look at, (as mentioned, it needed paint!) but, it's clean, and in good condition, set in a small fenced-in grass yard. Most times we were the ONLY ones in the pool...It felt alot like being in the backyard at home---not a bad thing in January! There is a simple bar and the service was excellent & very friendly. Overall, a good value for the money. There were a few problems at times---though, again, for the $$$ not to be unexpected-- the hot water was erratic----and the air conditioner in our room was broken the first night. The second night we were moved to another room, and that air conditioner was also problematic.
Suggestion: Make sure the air is working before you settle in....it gets VERY hot, even at night. It might be good to ask for a second floor room, as the first floor rooms at street level didn't seem to have much in the way of 'locks' on the windows. A security guard was posted nightly at the entrance to the hotel---BUT the front desk closed at 11 pm (and the staff went home) so any problems with rooms etc... had to wait until morning. Not the place for everyone, but a good value that's often hard to find amid the mega-resorts in St. Lucia.
