Hotel & Resort Reviews: St. Lucia
Jalousie Hilton 12/22/02
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
What follows after this paragraph is the same as my Sandals Halycon review - I wanted to give the Hilton a 4 star rating though - because it is the best hotel I have ever stayed in and deserves about 6 stars in my book! One thing I'd also like to add about the Hilton is that we found the staff excellent - friendly, courteous - they saw to our every need (and this included recommending restaurants off site). The rooms were beautiful, the beach gorgeous and not busy, the snorkelling and coral breathtaking... it was perfect!

I think whether you like various hotels on St. Lucia depends on your tastes. We went there in August 2002 and we originally intended to stay half our time at the Jalousie Hilton and half the time at Sandals halcyon. We didn't stay at Sandals long although we loved the Hilton - in fact we went back there after cancelling our Sandals stay.

Sandals just wasn't to our tastes. The rooms were VERY small compared to the Hilton, and the activities included things like beer drinking competitions. As we were on honeymoon we really just wanted to be together not surrounded by lots of other people the whole time, and Sandals was cramped. Because it's all inclusive, it's a waste of money to go to other restaurants too - so you don't get to sample the local restaurants or get off site.

The Hilton food is expensive but if you go to other restaurants nearby it's much cheaper, and we enjoyed finding new places to eat and meeting more of the locals. I'd also add that we liked the idea of supporting local businesses rather than just the big hotel chains.

I was so disappointed when I got to Sandals after the Hilton, I almost cried. The cost of staying at Sandals for 6 nights was basically what we paid at the Hilton (including the cost of all our food - but we did eat in restaurants outside the Hilton complex quite a lot - like Ladera, the Mango Tree restaurant, at Anse Chastenet, and in Soufriere).

The Hilton is located in the most breathtakingly beautiful place I've ever been, and for sheer luxury, space and beauty it is unbeaten. If you want to eat and drink a lot without going off site, and if you want a night life, it's not for you. If you just want to be with your new husband or wife, and to have as much time alone together as possible, to have your own plunge pool and a beautiful sea view - it's perfect!
