St. Lucia Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Rex and Papillon Hotel 04/17/2003
Reviewers Rating: Great
Just came back from a lovely stay at this resort complex. Beautiful beach, very nice and accommodating staff. Somewhat shabbily genteel in terms of general feel to the rooms, but I actually found that charming. The all-inclusive package was a great value, although the dinners were not to our taste. We tended to eat breakfast and lunch at the hotel and traverse the strip of delicious restaurants just located outside of the hotel. Their usual clientele is British and the dinners are cooked to suit that palate, cornish hens, ham, lamb with mint jelly, etc. Not what I think of as food to eat in the Caribbean. The Oriental restaurant on-site however, is very good and you receive a $20 credit per person if you are on the all-inclusive plan. Please note that there is very little difference between the Rex and Papillon sides of the resort. Food service at the Papillon grill was very casual and quick, serving burgers, sandwiches and ice cream at lunchtime. The Mariner restaurant was much slower with more food items on the menu for both dinner and lunch. Buffet lunches and breakfasts were available at both sides of the resort. I booked a superior (upgraded room) with a king size bed at the Rex and when I arrived they told me that it was not available with king size bed. They were nice and I was nice too, but I asked them to find me a room with king size bed since that was what I booked. We ended up with an upgraded oceanfront room in the Papillon. Much nicer than the room they originally reserved me in. I didn't care whether the room had a view, just needed the larger bed - we're tall. The Rex's own website shows a king size bed with sitting area for the superior room's description. If that's what you want be nice and persistent. Kindness goes a long way. The beach is lovely, lots of beautiful yachts moored in the harbor. Plenty of hobie cats for sailing and motorized watersports for an extra fee. There are tennis courts on-site and a kids club along with pools at both resorts. Decent snorkeling along the rocks at the Papillon side. If you wish to arrange tours on the island the hotel can accommodate you or any taxi driver will take you for a wide range of fees. The trip to the volcano and waterfalls is about two hours by car. We didn't feel that ambitious, but I would go if we returned. Altogether I thought it was a great value for the money and a beautiful place to spend a week.
