St. Lucia Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
Hummingbird Beach Resort 01/19/2004
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
I just returned from a week in Soufriere, where I stayed at the Hummingbird. This is a little place with just a few rooms - 12. I am a single woman travelling alone, and felt very comfortable there. The first room I had was one of the standard rooms. At $50 it was a good deal, but not a nice room. Small and very dark, and the shared bathroom was less than nice. After 3 nights I moved to a different room - one of the superiors. What a difference. This room was beautiful, with a view off the porch, spacious, and a fantastic bathroom. Although it was $30 more per night (I got $20 off since I was alone), it was well worth the extra money. The hotel provides a nice continental breakfast in the morning with a great view and service that is just slow enough. It includes tea or coffee, fresh fruit, a basket of toast and a muffin with preserves, and juice. It was plenty to tide me over until dinner, frankly.
The beach is just a few steps from your room, but this is not a particularly nice beach. The sand was hard and stoney. However, for 10 EC each way there are water taxis waiting to take you over to Anse Chastenet. That is a beautiful beach and I much preferred going there. The Hummingbird does have a small pool, with comfy chairs, that was very convenient for lounging if you can't get over to Anse Chastenet.
The Hummingbird is nicely situated in relation to the town of Soufriere, where there are plenty of low-priced restaurants and a few bars to choose from for evening frolicking. Most evenings I did not see other tourists in town much past the dinner hour, but don't let that keep you from enjoying a relaxing evening out. All are welcome and it is quite safe.
Right next door at The Still there is a PADI dive shop that offers well-priced diving with no more than 5 divers at a time. Five of the six dives I did were just me and the divemaster, and it was remarkable diving. Ask for Chester. You will not be disappointed.
The Hummingbird offers the opportunity to be more integrated into the local culture than you would find with an all-inclusive resort. For the cost and for my interests, it was an excellent choice.
