St. Lucia Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews Reviews
Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort - All Inclusive 09/14/2005
Reviewers Rating: Fair
Just returned from "The Grand" Sandals Hotel in St Lucia. It charges 5* prices however you only get 3* quality, if that. Our entrance in to the Grand was met by damaged furniture - chips, dents, cracks, dirty glasses everywhere and cup rings all over the furniture....after checking in we were showed to our room....our room smelled like an old caravan, the bathroom was moldy, the shower didn't work, the toilet was broken, and the bedside cabinets had cup ring marks on them and room maintenace leaves a lot to be desired. So, we were given a dirty bedroom. Not a great start. Our bedroom furntiture was old and tatty and looked liked it had been salvaged out of a charity shop!!! We complained as to the quality and cleaniness of the room, shower, mold and broken toilet and was offered a change or room. So we changed rooms, to another that smelled like an old caravan! Room maintenance doesn't exist - all the cleaning staff does is make your bed. I left the ironing board out with the iron to see if she would put it away - but no, it was left in the middle of the room. Stacks of dirty plates and food leftovers, cups and bottles are left outside your room in the corridor by other guests, and it is left all day and not cleared away by staff. Not a nice sight to see when you leave your room in the morning, or go back to your room during the day. Corridors are dirty, damage to the walls, dirty marks etc., carpets are dirty. Again we complained about the leftover food and dirty floors not being attended to. The food is like road side cafe food - I would not give my child this food let alone me eat it. There was buffet-style food served and it was like pulp. Totally disgusting. I suggest avoiding the Bayside Buffet. The tables are full of creepy crawleys that live in the table and fester on the muck where the tables are not cleaned. The staff seem moody, and avoid any eye contact with the guests and avoid getting into any conversation. One evening we were going back to our hotel and noticed broken bottle glass in the corridor and immediately reported it to reception in case someone didn't see it in the dark and got hurt. Reception promised it would be cleared away. 48 hours later it was still there and not ONE member of staff cleared it away. There is NO (repeat - NO) evening entertainment. You have a sax player who plays while you eat your evening meal, and then you twiddle your thumbs afterwards as there is nothing to do, so you end up going to bed by 10pm! I received counterfiet money from their shop - not amusing when they wouldn't take it back and it took a song and dance to rectify. Eventually we wanted to see the Duty Manager (Vincent Caferky), who I might add, was seen more than once by us. He gave $150 worth of vouchers to use at the Spa, and a candlelight dinner on the beach (would have been $220) normally. I had a reiki session and the guy wore an ipod and listened to music whilst doing the reiki and all I could hear was the volume going up and down and buttons being clicked. Resentfully I paid. However I was so upset, I was practically in tears when I found out the Spa had charged $80 to my room, even though I had paid them in full. They admitted that was a mistake when my husband went berserk at the spa, and then complained again to another manager (higher than Vincent mentioned earlier). I think his name was Wilson.....my husband dragged him all round the hotel at Wilson's reluctance, showing him how disgusting the place was and repeated that broken glass was reported 48 earlier and not cleared away. Wilson got dragged to where the glass still lay. I would also like to add here that chicken bones were left in the corridor surrounded by ants and creatures. This was reported and the next day it still hadn't been cleared away. The pool: nothing great here....the sun loungers have bird excrement on them and it's not cleaned by the staff. There is mold and algae round the edges of the pool and it is not cleaned off. Lucky if you get a bit of pool music.
I want to make a point to anyone reading this, believe me, there were quues of people wanting to complain about the standard of the hotel. Guests were checking out and leaving to go other other resorts. One couple we met had checked out of the Antigua hotel because it was so dirty. Another couple had checked out of Sandals Halycon hotel because they said it was disgusting.
Another couple we met were desperate to check out of Sandals Grand because it was so filthy. There is nice big book on the reception desk which logs all complaints.
Those that say this place is nice must be going around with their eyes closed because it is not all that! Oh by the way, it is not actually a 5* hotel it is "5 stars". Apparently.
