St. Lucia Hotel & Villa Reviews

Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort - All Inclusive 05/19/2010
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
My Fiancé and I traveled out of the US for the very first time and stayed at the Sandals Grande in St. Lucia. We booked well over a year in advance after carefully checking the reviews. Our decision was based on the rave reviews we read and are happy to report that we too, are lovers of this Resort and this island!
Our vacation was 14 days at the same resort; one week of vacation and we honeymooned for the other...we were married on beach! The transfer from the airport caught us a bit off guard, the living standards of the locals are far less than what we are used to at home. The resort, however, was Luxurious! We were given a room upgrade upon our arrival (as almost everyone is, we heard) and had a great oceanfront view with a nice big balcony. On a clear day, we could see the island of Martinique! We met with our wedding coordinator the day after our arrival and started the ball rolling right off. She was fantastic from the get-go. She was warm and friendly (as was mostly all of the staff) and made us feel like family for the duration of our stay. The ease of the wedding process was well worth the idea of eloping in a foreign country.
We booked several excursions in an attempt to see the island and really get the most bang for our buck. We tried to hire our own photographer as we read various reviews of people who were very dissatisfied with their wedding photos and complaints about the cost. We were informed that that was not possible so our plan was to try to find someone who would take some photos for us of the brief ceremony. Two couples we met on the beach showed up at our wedding, and took some really good shots for us. After the brief reception, we walked along the beach and through the Pillars as we were directed, and met with Bill Mortley, whom we hired to shoot some formal wedding photos for us. Before leaving the US, we read lots of reviews about how good a photographer he was, and we found that compared to what Sandals charges, his charges were very reasonable. Bill made our day really special. He took us all over the place pausing every now and again at some picturesque location, and took several hundred quality photos of us. That was really worth the effort.
We also did some horseback riding, which was ok at best, but a nice experience for the price. Using a referral from other guests of the resort, we booked a day tour to Soufriere by boat. Although you are advised not to hire them as they are not affiliated with Sandals, we found them very straight forward, reasonable priced and the trip was safe. Can’t understand why the Resort would try to deprive the locals the opportunity to earn a living, just so they can do the tour themselves at a much higher price.
Sandals was indeed complete luxury. While they try real hard to ensure you have a great time with them, I cannot fathom the policy of not allowing people to choose their photographer. After all, it was our wedding. We would gladly have paid the Resort a fee to allow Bill Mortley to attend our wedding but that was not to be allowed. Our pleas went nowhere. While I am happy to report they were successful as far as the accommodation and service, we were not pleased about the photography.
The best part of this vacation, by far, was the exceptional service provided by some many wonderful staff members. Given the number of guests these people see day in and day out, there were so many that remembered us on a first name basis, treated us like old friends and went out of their way to ensure our satisfaction and enjoyment.
