Hotel Reviews: St. Martin/St. Maarten
Pelican Resort and Casino 9/21/00
Reviewers Rating: Fair
Don't stay at the Pelican. We were there from 9/10 -9/17/00. Our room, which was in the Bougenvilla building was infested with roaches. Upon, first arriving, we asked for a room with a nice view (either on the beach or by the pool). We got one overlooking the olympic size "B" pool. When we first went into our room, it looked nice; olive green, but clean. As the week went on, we found roaches in the kitchen, the bathroom, and on the night table beside the bed. It was gross. Our neighbors had the same problem, so it appears that at least this building of the Pelican Resort was definitely infested. There was absolutely nothing going on at the resort (we knew it was low season, but the resort was practically deserted. Some of the rooms are still boarded up from last years hurricane distruction. The staff at the front desk were not very "friendly". They did have a decent breakfast at the Croc Cafe. You had to walk a-ways or drive down to the beach, and the beach ! has been taken over by the Sunterra resort. They are offering timeshares at the Pelican for $950; sounds like a good deal...until we went down the road and checked it out futher with an independent real estate agent. Maintenance fees are around the $550 mark now; with NO maintenance going on. Count on them, to go up considerably. They are going to need a lot of money and alot of work to get this place back to the resort it once was. I can take alot of things, and I realize that you are in the islands, but an infestation of roaches is not acceptable. Take your money somewhere else.
