Hotel & Resort Reviews: St. Martin/St. Maarten
Great Bay Beach Hotel and Casino 03/24/02
Reviewers Rating: Fair
Just returned from 2 weeks at GBBH. As we got a "deal" on the price for this resort the service was not bad, but if you intend to go you should be aware of a few things. The beach although it looks great in pictures was rebuilt after a hurricane with a very coarse sand, made up of broken sea shells - very difficult to walk on and quite easy to cut your feet. To get into the water you have to go down a steep slope, and once in the water there is quite a drop - very difficult to get out again, especially if the waves were big. No shade on the beach. The hotel supplies free umbrellas that you have to put up yourself but half of them were not in good condition(you also have to drag your own beach chairs over a wide stretch of beach). We rented a car and went to other beaches during the day.

The meals were very average. Best meal of the day was breakfast, but with no variety from day to day. There seemed to be no thought given to the planning of meals. On the day for "pasta night" we were also served pasta at lunch!! Also pasta was served with teryaki chicken instead of rice. The a la carte meals were better than the buffets, but again a lack of imagination in the menus - tomato juice or melon or fruit salad for an appetizer. The second week the menus got a bit better, but the Friday night dinner show menu was the same. Oh, if you are a smoker you will be put at the back of the room - great seats by the window, but for the show you cannot hear anything - the sound system did not work.
