Great Bay Beach Hotel 04/24/02

I just got back from a week stay at the Great Bay Beach Hotel in St. Maarten. The view from my room was wonderful. The beach was fine. The hotel bartenders make good drinks. However, the other hotel staff and accomodations were disappointing. I found some of the hotel staff discourteous and unhelpful. We had a toilet that leaked and would not flush. We had to wait 3 days and make several calls to finally get it fixed. A hotel staff member organized a taxi for us which appeared to be a "buddy" who had a dilapidated car which did not display a "taxi" sign. Fortunately we were armed with a taxi rate sheet because the driver and hotel staff padded the fares in their rate quote. The entire situation was unsafe and unreputable. The town of Phillipsburg was threatening and we were constantly harrassed for sale promotions. I did not feel protected or supported by the hotel either. I do not recommend the all inclusive option because the food was mediocre at best. There is no way to just order anything ala carte such as a sandwich or snack. They do not have a resturant and the only way you can eat at the hotel is to pay for the featured buffet that day for a specific dining time. The hotel is very limited on amenities. It was very difficult to enjoy my stay with the hotel. I highly recommend accomodations elsewhere.
