Hotel & Resort Reviews: St. Martin/St. Maarten
Grand Case Beach Club 11/03/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
We've stayed at this hotel twice - most recently in October of 2002. We spoke with several others there who were also multiple-time visitors of this property, as well as some new comers - all of whom said they really liked it. The hotel lost their hilltop restaurant in hurricane Luis in 1995, but other than that, the property hadn't changed much from our earlier visit. It's an intimate place on the quite end of Grand Case. If you want to be in the middle of tourist activity, this wouldn't be the place to stay. You can get to those places with a car or by bus. We like the private beach, the laid-back atmosphere, and the personal feel. It's not a polished "Ritz-Carlton" kind of place, but nice and clean. The units are really condominiums, so they come with small refrigerators, dished, utensils, and stoves. There are several mini-marts in town, so we always buy some cold drinks in town. The beach bar is literally steps from your lounge chair, and if you want, you can raise your flag, place your order, and have your drink delivered.

You can also walk about 1/2 mile to some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean. Many restaurants have daily specials, usually displayed on a chalkboard outside the restaurant. The menu is also usually displayed for you to see before you enter. You will be hard pressed to chose from among all the offerings. You can go very casual to very chic. We tend to like the gourmet restaurants, so they are a bit pricier, but to us, worth it. Personal favorites include (1) Le Tastevin - on the water and where one of our waiters from 9 years ago is now the maitre de, (2) L'Auberge Gourmande - across from Le Tastevin with very personable staff, especially Christophe, (3) Le Pressior - not quite in town but nearer to the hotel across from the Grand Case Cultural Center, but probably our favorite this time (Jerome is great), and (4) Il Nettuno, on the water and a combination of French and Italian (it's a bit larger than the others so could be a bit noisy in season). I know there are many others in Grand Case, but several well-known spots were still closed in October. Don't fear that - there are plenty of places to choose from even then.

All in all, a very comfortable place to stay.
