St. Martin/St. Maarten Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews
The Pelican Resort 01/21/2004
Reviewers Rating: Fair
My husband and I traded in our Marriott timeshare and stayed at this resort 2 years ago (in 2002). It was such a horrible experience that I'm still thinking about it and have finally decided to write a review. The room we stayed in was absolutely disgusting. Although we saw no roaches, I can believe how other units would be infested. Mold was actually growing on the bathroom floor. My husband and I had to buy flip-flops to wear inside our room. We also had to put towels down on the furniture before we'ld sit down. There are rooms which they claim have been refurbished. When I asked for a different room, I was rudely told that the entire resort was booked. By looking around at the dead atmosphere, it was pretty obvious that they were lying. The place was deserted. In fact, only one restaurant was opended in the entire resort. The staff was rude. The only nice person was a repairman who came to our room to fix all the holes in the window screen. He saw me crying (over the disgusting conditions) and he asked if I was ok. That was the extent of basic human kindness that we experienced during our stay at the Pelican. Our airline lost our luggage. We needed to call a 1-800 number to check on the status of our luggage. The phones in the rooms at the Pelican will not dial out without an AT&T calling card. We were not able to use a credit card or call collect. (The airline accepts collect calls regarding lost luggage issues). I asked the front desk for assisance. They told me to walk to a pay phone. So my husband and I had to walk down the street to a payphone. If you haven't booked yet- DON'T. I've never stayed in a worse hotel. And that's saying alot b/c I went on spring break 4 times and stayed in dive rooms that only cost a total of $99 for 7 nights. If you already booked, the one saving grace is that St. Maarten is the best island in the Caribbean. I love it. My husband and I are actually going back in 2 months. (It will be my 5th time on the island). So although the room is really really bad, you'll still be in an amazing place. I would recommend renting a car. The beaches there are great. We went to a different beach every day. I still cant believe how beautiful they are. The beach at the Pelican is very nice too. My husband and I read reviews b/f we left and some were positive. Those authors must have stayed in refurbished rooms.
