Hotel Mont Vernon

My husband and I have just returned from a week at Hotel Mount Vernon which is situated high on a hill over looking picturesque Orient Bay. Although we did know that the grounds were undulating before we went, it was a lot worse than we expected. Our room was a long way from the main part of the hotel and the beach. The only advantage was that it was very quiet and we were not bothered by the disco at night. The room was large and clean. It had a balcony which got the late day sun. Our room was advertised as 'garden view' but we overlooked a large salt pond and mud flats. The bed linen and towels were changed daily. The bed was comfortable. The air conditioning did not cool the room as much as the temperature gauge indicated but it was bearable. The shower should have had a slip proof bottom. One could have very easily slipped when it was wet. There was nothing much to hang onto so you had to be careful. Breakfast and dinner were OK but lunch seemed to be leftovers reheated. The luncheon salad bar consisted mainly of leaf lettuce and olives with a few other items thrown in depending on the day. I was disappointed that the fresh fruit did not have much taste considering most of it is grown in the Caribbean. A lot of it tasted like it had been picked too soon and not allowed to ripen. We had the opportunity to have dinner at four different restaurants on the island. We only tried three and of those, Le Taitu was the best. The food at the others was very mediocre. The beach was lovely but unless you got down there early in the morning to reserve a cabana, you were out of luck. Sometimes there was a change-over after lunch. There was a very nice shaded area around the pool and the thick foam pad cushions for the chairs were wonderfully comfortable if you just wanted to relax and read a book. Unfortunately, they had to be returned by five p.m. and that was a little early to leave the pool and beach. The 'optional clothing' on the beach took a little getting used to. One thing that was very off-putting was a horrible odour of rotting food or something which came around the pool area next to where the towels and cushions were given out. You had to hold your nose when passing by there to get to the bar and dining area. There was a sign-up sheet to arrange your car rentals days. By the time we went to sign up all the slots were gone. Another sheet was posted for the next day and that too got filled until they added an extra session. In the end, it didn't seem to matter whether you signed up or not, people just got in line to book their car and places for dinner. It was now day 2 and when we went for our appointment, the earliest we could get our car rental was day 4. It was therefore impossible for us to use it for 4 days even if we wanted to. However, we found that 2 days were sufficient to tour the island and it was useful to have the car to get to the various dinner locations. The shopping in Phillipsburg was amazing and you could find some good bargains in jewellery. I probably would not go back for another visit as there are other islands that I have visited where the beaches are just as nice and the food is better.
