We stayed at the Point Grace with friends over the new Year, attracted by its own marketing blurb and glossy brochure. The hotel is a lovely hotel (although a long way from any facilities such as shops etc) and sits on a lovely beach amidst a large number of other lower star "all inclusive" hotels. We stayed in one of the "cottages" around the pool for $650 per night incl taxes and were greatly under-impressed! Our experiences were:- "rip off" prices for everything, including a $200 (US) per person "gourmet" dinner with wine which was appallingly bad and many people were so unimpressd with the wine included with the meal that they ordered wine separately - at additional cost of course
- each day was a daily fight for pool sunloungers and beach loungers and shades. The only way to get one was to "reserve" a bed the night before with books etc on the bed or.. "tip" the attendants each day to find you a sunbed and shade
- attendants were impolite, lazy and generally unhelpful
- sheets would have not been changed during the entire week we were there had we not specifically requested them to change them (remember.. $650 per night...)
- taxis, called by by the hotel, to transport guests to the nearest supermarket charged me $12 return (fair enough), another guest $18 and a rather gullible couple... $75 !!
- Management were indifferent to the problems that all guests faced. In fact, there was practically a revolt amongst the guests and everyone wanted a meeting with the owner/manager ... but there was not one person we could find who had overall responsibility for the hotel and making things better.
- We were so disgusted. We left a day early!
- To add insult to injury... the hotel tried to overcharge me by over $1000 US on my bill by charging me twice for the New Years awful dinner ($847 to be precise! instead of $447 for 2 people) and by expecting me to pay for the last night when I had booked but decided not to stay - although I gave them > 24 hrs notice of this. Needless to say.. I didn't pay this.
All in all, the hotel has much to improve upon if it wants to market itself as a 5 star up-market holiday hotel.
In the meantime - drop the prices since value-for-money this hotel definitely does not provide at present.
I hope they get the message.
