Great
If you are looking for an unpretentious, low-key place to stay in Grenada the Rex could be your place. If you are looking for luxurious accommodations and gourmet food I would recommend that you look elsewhere.
My wife and I were looking for an off-the-beaten-path island (that still had non-stop service from New York) and we didn't want to spend a fortune. We took the all-inclusive option and booked a standard hillside view room for a week. The staff was very accommodating and got to know us personally.
The resort is located a stone's throw from the airport. The low frequency of flights kept the proximity from being a nuisance. Many of the guests were older middle aged Europeans, mostly from the United Kingdom. The resort does a good job catering to their core clientele.
The grounds were well maintained and featured three ponds containing sea turtles and other wildlife. We arrived during the dry season and it was evident by the brown grass and lack of foliage on the trees.
The decent-sized rooms were painted in a robin's egg shade of blue and featured the basics necessities. The architecture is of the typical bomb shelter variety. Lots of concrete! While not very appealing to the eye, the thick concrete walls kept the room quiet and cool. We had no television, though there was a television lounge in the lobby. We ended up staying in two different rooms due to a snowstorm at home that extended our stay for four additional days. The oceanview courtesy room we were in on our last day featured satellite television and was definitely a step up.
The resort featured two restaurants - one Asian/Indian inspired (dinner only) and the other a buffet. The buffet (open for breakfast and dinner) was the only option on the all-inclusive plan, though you do get a credit for the sit-down Asian. The food at the buffet was typical--nothing to write home about. We were able to find something to eat every night and just kept the drinks coming. The Asian restaurant was much better, but in keeping with our goal of traveling on a budget we only ate there twice. Overall, the service at the Rex was better than many other Caribbean all-inclusives we have vacationed at.
The poolside lunch restaurant was the one real negative we experienced. It has too limited of a menu if you are staying over two days. Most of the food was either fried or otherwise not appealing to us. We got by on burgers and a better than expected pizza.
The beach was great! There are reefs right off of the beach that were better than some of the snorkeling excursions we went on. So if you want a good value, I can recommend the Rex.
