Man O Man. Gustav may be set up for a direct pass over the GOM's loop current's July "eddie" betwen Cuba and Texas AFTER Gustav passes through a high level anticyclone and the regular loop current north of W Cuba.
A very similar "eddie" supercharged both Katrina and Rita in 2004 close to landfall. Did those two disasters have either of the other two charging factors in place?
If Gustav slows down (as it is doing right now), hits all three, and lands near a GOM city with no wind shear or other negative factors, watch out. Once, twice, three times...a Perfect Storm.
No matter what, it's shutoff time for most of the rigs. Move to Costa Rica or Panama, like I did. Look out for record casualities in Port au Prince Haiti. God Bless all of them, Les Miserables.
