2 GRINGOS IN THE CARIBBEAN

Here is a blog, "2 GRINGOS IN THE CARIBBEAN", from a couple in the Turks & Caicos. They have a lot of photos up and have been blogging about Hanna. (Of course technically the T&C are not in the Caribbean - they are in the Atlantic Ocean... but I bet they know that now after living there for a couple of years - it is mistake a lot people make.)

What's happening to Grace Bay regarding Hanna?

Actually, the TCI is in the Caribbean. It is not in the Caribbean Sea, but it is in the Caribbean. By some definitions, it is the northern border of the Caribbean.

And... if you ask any local in this nation - they will tell you that they grew up in the Caribbean.

I know people call it the Caribbean - but I also know I researched this once (this whole website developed from our cartography business) and I am pretty sure the definitive geographic answer is that they are not in the "Caribbean" officially. The TCI is an extension of the Bahamas Island chain (the Bahamas are not the Caribbean either). These islands are in the Atlantic. Caribbean islands share some natural boundary with the Caribbean sea. I just searched around and can't find a documented answer anywhere on line...

Ah - for instance - this page (I know - it is just a page on the web) identifies the Bahamas and TCI as the Lucayan archipelago:

They also do not appear in most lists of the Greater Antilles. It is just a lot easier for people to describe these islands as Caribbean than try to say they are in the Atlantic, south of the Bahamas, etc.

Anyway - would love to see what references you guys can come up with!
