Landhuizen are the plantation houses of the 18th and 19th centuries. Some are open to the public and renovated to their former architectural splendor. They are steeped in the history of Curacao and well worth investigating.
Landhuis Brievengat (Curacao Map F-13), devastated by a hurricane in 1877, was donated by Shell to the government, which restored it to its former grandeur. Visit during the day and view the elegant antique furniture and crafts for sale. Visit at night on Wednesday and Friday and enjoy cocktails, dinner and dancing. Call 737-8344 for information about their folkloric shows.
Landhuis Kenepa Knip (Curacao Map B-2) was once one of the most prosperous plantations on the island. An uprising of the slaves occurred in 1795 which eventually led to their emancipation. The house now supports a museum and antique furniture exhibit.
At Landhuis Chobolobo (Curacao Map H-13) sample the fine liqueur of Curacao. Distilled on the premises, it can be purchased only on the island. There is also a garden restaurant with live music on weekends. Local artists' work is displayed as well.
Landhuis Groot Santa Marta (Curacao Map E-4) was built in 1700, renovated in 1979 and now stands to care for the physically and mentally challenged, whose crafts are for sale on the premises. Telephone 864-0244 for information.
One of the oldest greathouses on the island is Jan Kok (Curacao Map F-7). It overlooks the salt flats where flocks of flamingoes brighten the landscape. They offer a bar and restaurant for your enjoyment. Call 864-8087 for a tour schedule.
