Although the restaurant Le Rivage in Grand Cul de Sac closed its doors several months ago, you can still enjoy their delicious rhum vanille. Bottles of this elixir can be purchased at the boutique La Pinta in Gustavia, at the restaurant O'Corner (previously The BBQ), and at the restaurant Le Tamarin in Saline.
Le Petit Deauville, that little shop on La Pointe in Gustavia with the wonderful sorbets and ice cream, has opened a second location at Rue de la Republique - across from where the Voyager docks. In addition to sorbets and ice cream, they also offer coffee, fresh fruit juice and snacks. I hope they plan to stay open late enough for the arrival of the final crossing of the Voyager from St Martin!
Tradewind Aviation provides first-class, nonstop air service between San Juan, PR and St Barth. They have recently announced a special fare of $350 (one way) for bookings made before November 1, 2007. With the regular price of $495, this is a savings of $145. In addition, they offer a special rate of $200 for residents of St Barth. Tradewind Aviation is a U.S. carrier whose planes are jet-prop powered, air-conditioned and are flown by two fully qualified crew members. You can make reservations on-line at http://www.tradewindaviation.com.
It's a mystery. Last Sunday evening, a man jumped from the Voyager when it was about 15 feet from the dock and swam the rest of the way. No one knows why he did it, but is it that hard to understand?! I'd guess that after a long, arduous day of traveling, he saw St Barth within his reach and just couldn't wait any longer!
Woman with the Most Body-Piercings in the World Visits St Barth
Elaine Davidson, a former Brazilian nurse, recently visited St Barth, where she did NOT blend into the crowd! In 2001, Davidson made it into the Guinness Book of Records as the most pierced woman in the world with 720 piercings, 192 of which were on her face. Today, she has a total of 3902 tattoos and body piercings, for a total weight of over six pounds. Davidson, who holds a black belt in judo, now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland where she is a fortune-teller and owner of the boutique Tropical Rainbow. I hope the man who has the body-piercing and tattoo store in St Jean had an opportunity to meet her!
From May 24 to June 31, St Barth may be just the place to find the greatest bargains. This is the period of the official sales, and most stores reduce prices from 50% to 70%. Now, remember, the price reductions are on merchandise from last season's collections. But, last season's collections on St Barth are years ahead of next year's collections in the States! So, hurry on down and don't forget to bring an empty suitcase - and a credit card. The next official sale period is from September 29 to October 27.
From May 30 to June 3, the Guanahani Resort & Spa will host an event to award the first literary prize given in the name of this luxury hotel located on Grand Cul de Sac. Although Marc Thezé, the director of the hotel, created the prize, the name "Guanahani Literary Prize" comes from the book Je vous aime by French author Catherine Siguret, which was published in November 2006. The plot involves a Parisian woman and a successful writer and contains a scene set during the awarding of the Guanahani Literary Prize. When Thezé read the book, he decided to make the fictional prize a reality. The winner of the award will be chosen by a jury of celebrities from the world of French literature and media. The jury will meet at the Guanahani to select the best romance novel out of five pre-selected French novels published this year. The winner, whose identity will be revealed on June 3, will receive an all-inclusive week at the hotel for two, complete with airline tickets.
Digital Video-On-Demand Installed at the Emeraude Plage Hotel
InfoValue Computing, Inc. (InfoValue), along with its partner Concierge Express and its regional subsidiary Sun Media Network of Simpson Bay Yacht Club in St Maarten, has just completed the first installation of a digital video-on-demand (VOD) system on St Barth. The system, InfoValue SuiteTV, was installed at the luxurious, beachfront Emeraude Plage Hotel in St Jean and offers VOD, an information portal and Internet access over the television in all of the hotel's suites, tropical bungalows and villas. Hotel guests can access VOD content interactively on their 32" HDTVs, view local attractions and hotel amenities via the information portal and take advantage of high-speed Internet access provided by the save HDTV screen with a wireless keyboard input. But, let's hope the guests don't forget that the best video-on-demand is just steps from their room - in full, living color!
Ouanaloa Dive, located just behind the restaurant La Gloriette in Grand Cul de Sac, is PADI-certified and ANMP-certified (Association Nationale des Moniteurs de Plongee - French National Association of Monitors of Diving). They offer drift diving, night diving, underwater scooters, and kite-surfing. Their dive boat leaves from the Sereno Beach Hotel each day at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.
"The fund will seek to achieve absolute returns by creating a stream of development projects to be sold on completion. "Some of the investments will be in the development of rural land while others will be renovations or rebuilding existing properties," said Tim de Rosen, the fund's director. Targeted locations include St. Barts, Harbour Island in the Bahamas, St. Tropez, Cap d'Antibes, Cap Ferrat and similar resorts."
You can read the whole thing here. Sounds a bit speculative in nature - "projects to be sold on completion" - to me for the Caribbean market.
A company called Fly Tampa makes "airports" for flight simulation. Their newest package is for St. Maarten, and includes the infamous St. Barts airstrip - check out the computer image (click it for a bigger version) - pretty cool.
A beautiful and pristine white-sand beach on the northwestern coast that is rarely crowded. You will often see locals flying kites or fishing off of the rocks at either end of the beach. A small grove of coconut palms provides some shade. For lunch or a cold drink, visit the Hotel St-Barth Ile de France or the restaurant La Langouste, both of which are next to beach.
Crystal Cruises has released the survey results of its Top 10 rated Crystal Adventures shore excursions in the Caribbean, and one of them is on St. Barts:
"Water excursions dominated, with shark feeding a unanimous favorite. Parasailing, scuba diving, kayaking, fishing, snorkeling and racing adventures placed in the Top 10. Thrill-seekers who like their kicks on land also highly rated Crystal's ATV Adventure in St. Barts for the chance to motor to secluded villages and beaches and to climb into the hills for stunning panoramic views. Other notable mentions include a kayaking adventure in St. Kitts and a 100-foot submarine plunge under the sea to explore coral reefs in Grand Cayman."
I wonder what residents think about this? Sounds like it could be kind of annoying...
A lot of people sailing the Caribbean have started blogs and post something new whenever they make port. There is some interesting stuff out there - here is one example:
"It was yet another great sail to St. Barthelemy (better known as St. Barts) and we anchored outside of Gustavia harbor (N17 54.045 W62 51.375) with enough time for a grocery shopping trip before dinner. When we were here with the catamaran, we were moored nicely within the harbor, we were surprised with the amount of rolling going on outside of the harbor, so on Tuesday after a pastry run, we headed a few miles north to the beautiful anchorage at Anse du Columbier and picked up a mooring at (N17 55.520 W62 52.260). It is really neat to be anchored right in the city of Gustavia, but Reinhart and I really prefer the setting of Columbier with its isolated beach and crystal clear dark turquoise water; and with a decent dinghy engine, you can motor into Gustavia anytime you want a more metropolitan existence. There was plenty to do with swimming, snorkeling, and a hiking trail to the town of Flamands on the north side of the island, and we ended up spending two nights moored securely in the bay while the winds kicked-up outside."
On Sunday, April 29, Le Centre Nautique of St Barth organized an around-the-island race for catamarans and windsurfers. They departed from St Jean Bay at 10:00 am, with an estimated arrival time of 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm. A barbecue, bar, music by BRH (Blues, Rock and Harmony) and the awarding of prizes awaited their return. The current record for windsurfers is 1 hour 14 minutes by Ricardi Maricel from St Martin and 1 hour 52 minutes for catamarans, set by Jeff Lédée and Vincent Jordil of St Barth. The weather couldn't have been more accommodating with blue, sunny skies and a strong wind.

There was some concern last week when the air-traffic controllers at the St Maarten airport went on strike. However, it turns out that if there is ever a problem with air-traffic control in St Maarten, the air-traffic controllers in San Juan, Puerto Rico take over. Don't you just love having a Plan B!
In response to a growing demand for more cinema activities from students and adults, Ciné St Barth, the nonprofit association behind the St Barth Film Festival, is planning several new projects. Since the beginning of the film festival 12 years ago, filmmakers have scheduled time to visit the schools to promote filmmaking as a profession and to increase the understanding of cinema. They have clearly done a good job! As a result of the increased interest, Ciné St Barth hopes to establish an editing studio and a film club, where Caribbean films can be shown all year. Establishing a film club has been a long-time desire, but the lack of a venue for showing the videos always put it on hold. Now, with the availability of the new room upstairs at the Capitainerie in the office building of the Harbor Master, this dream may become a reality.
The sound of the blowing of lambis (conch shells) announced the arrival of Le Francis Garnier in Flamands last week. Everyone wondered, "Why is this military ship right on the beach?!" It turned out that the naval ship, based in Martinique, was on a mission to find accessible beaches in St Barth in case the island suffers a natural catastrophe, such as an earthquake or a hurricane, that destroys the docks in Gustavia and Public and forces the airport to close. The goal was to find beaches that the flat-bottomed boat could access in order to unload men, equipment and supplies necessary for a rescue operation. The two beaches deemed the most accessible are Flamands and Shell Beach in Gustavia. With a maximum speed of 13 knots per hour, it would take the better part of a morning for the ship to reach St Barth The lambis sounded again as they departed, and the ship's crew responded with the ship's horn and a message with it's signal light.
Comedy will be the star this year at the sixth annual St Barth Theater Festival, which takes place from May 4 to May 13. The festival is organized by the local nonprofit organization SB Artists, who will perform two of the six plays. The performances will take place in the Capitainerie in the office building of the Habormaster on the quai in Gustavia. For reservations, call 06 90 41 84 17 or 06 90 41 86 48.
